Understanding World Food-Fuel Crisis

Re: Understanding World Food-Fuel Crisis
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
"Don't tell me, for the love of God, that food is expensive because of biodiesel. Food is expensive because the world wasn't prepared to see millions of Chinese, Indians, Africans, Brazilians and Latin Americans eat,” Lula told reporters. "We want to discuss this not with passion but rationality and not from the European point of view,” he added. :D |
Re: Understanding World Food-Fuel Crisis
The biggest point in that article is something I've been saying for a long, long time. People don't realize how how resource heavy producing meat is. It takes a lot more resources to create the average american/western diet than it does to supply one without meat. For most resources the difference is about 10 fold. When less than 1/5 of the worlds population was eating that diet we could just barely get by resource-wise, but when a huge part of the world starts becoming able and willing to consume more meat and thus increasing their impact 5 to ten times, there will be a dramatic effect on both the environment and world economy.

Re: Understanding World Food-Fuel Crisis
Switch grass has a ton of promise, but we need to get some more backing behind it. Cellulosic ethanol is the wave of the future and is starting to take off, this is a big step in the right direction!
Cellulosic ethanol uses plant cellulose that is normally waste and turns it into fuel, things like the corn stalk, husk, cob, wheat stalks, etc. This will likely be where switch grass comes in also. This could be the thing that takes down the oil cartel's and lets us give the middle east the finger :D http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080514...o_080514161843 |
