Rebuilding my turbo
:skiing:I know there are tutorials on rebuilding turbos, but I'm not sure if it would be worth my time trying to do it myself. I would still probably have to get it balanced after the fact anyways. Which leads me to the real question. Does anyone know of a shop or person around the minneapolis area that will rebuild a turbo if I bring them the turbo and re-build kit? Oil is leaking around the exhaust side of my turbo and is causing a loss in oil pressure.

Re: Rebuilding my turbo
I will give them a call tommrow and see what they say. Anyone have any comments about ebay turbo rebuild kits? Are they half decent or are they all crap.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160230546423 Would you say that this is a good kit? or should I stick to mitsubishi made parts for the rebuild with a kit like this, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MEWA:IT&ih=002 I'm gonna do a leak down test, but would a turbo oil leak be considered a boost leak because there isint enough oil pressure going to the turbo that it some how effects the air intake creating a boost leak? Probably not the correct termonolgy for the previous statement. |
Re: Rebuilding my turbo
you could try to do it yourself but then you'll have to get it balanced and all that good jazz afterwords or i atleast rec. it. And for mitsu turbo id go with oem parts... some things i just wouldnt use other than oem parts.

Re: Rebuilding my turbo
It's probably cheaper to have someone just balance it compared to having them rebuild and balance it right? There is a really nice tutorial, http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Turbo-rebuild.html I guess I could handle everything and just have it balanced afterwards. It looks like I wouldent even have to take the turbo nut-bolts off because I bet the oil is leaking past the seal that is located right below the cerclip that holds the compressor housing together. But since I got it off I might as well do it all right? Have you re-built a turbo awd? I know a machinest, think I should consider the 16g upgrade by getting a 16g compressor wheel and machining the housing or getting a 16g housing? Would I need to upgrade my injectors,Fuel pressure regulator, and chip my computer to accomidate the 16g crossbreed?

Re: Rebuilding my turbo
I just made the call and it's been decided that I'm gonna rebuild it myself and have it balanced for 75$. And I will use satan's parts for the rebuild. If anyone has rebuilt a tdo5 it would be really nice of you if you could spare some time and help me with the rebuild. Or even if you knew where I could have some of the turbo parts that were cooked bead blasted for cheap I would reall appreciate it.

Re: Rebuilding my turbo
I found a rebuild kit on ebay that was good and the guy also balances the turbo for free, you just have to mail it to him. I already rebuilt the turbo and am going to mail it today. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MITSU...7296QQtcZphoto
The gaskets on my turbo were so bad, I can't wait to put it back in! What I don't get is how oil doesnt leak past the seal ring on the turbine shaft? http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/1732/cimg1877xt4.jpg |

If your guy has the option for a 'step gapped' piston ring, go that route vs a standard straight cut. It's a minor difference but also aids in keeping oil from leaking into your turbine side. $.02 |
