Wireless Routers
 

What do you guys use? Which one do you think is the best?

G or N?

So far I'm down to those two, Any other suggestions? Things to look for? I will have a desktop wired, a laptop wireless and a PS3 wireless connecting up to it.

I've only ever run Linksys wireless routers but even they have issues. The 2 you are looking at are the same speed "N" and they backwards compatible all the way back to 802.11b which is 11 meg/sec. Maybe somebody else can tell you if the brands you are looking at are any good without being biased.

I haven't followed router technology for the last couple years. Can the newer Linksys models be hacked like the older ones? In the last house I lived in we were getting wireless from a guy across the road. We had the router in our living room setup as a repeater and from there were able to get wireless in our garage and show.

If there is no WEP encryption set among other security measures... yes you can pickup a neighbors signal. Mostly households don't contain an IT guy so when they buy/install it, it's pretty much open to the public. But for someone who knows what they're doing, you can setup shared keys, only allow specific MAC addresses to connect, etc...

Well I would assume that getting "N" would be the best way to go seeing how its the fastest. What would even be the reason to still by "G"?

I really don't care what brand it is, I just want to stay at a 100 bucks or less and obviously get the best bang for the buck.

That wasn't my question, poor wording on my part. My question was can the newer routers be hacked in terms of custom firmware (i.e.- setting the router up as a repeater)?

Check out dd-wrt, that is the hacking software for the rounters. It lets you do all kinds of cool stuff. You can bridge routers, manually turn up the power and it is great for port forwarding for games. I am running a Buffalo router and the thing has amazing range. Do some research on www.dd-wrt.com

I use the BestBuy brand of wireless router in my apt. I have had zero issues over 2 months of use. I think I paid $35 for router.

Went with the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Router. Got it all hooked up and its going good so far. 7 internal antennas with MIMO. My laptop shows I am "not connected" but I am? I don't know what the deal is.. I'm pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff.


Edit: This is pissing me off, I updated the wireless drivers and firmware. The laptop drops the signal and that little thing in the bottom corner that shows when the wireless is active looks as if I am not even connected.


Any help would be very appreciated!

Well, I just changed how my laptop connects to the wireless. Was completely unaware of the Intel PROset/Wireless aspect of it. I always had windows manage my wireless connection. Using the intel works so much better with connectivity its ridiculous even more so with this new router my internet is so much faster 10x according to the box ;)

Just have to mention, This router is pretty nice. I have not had a single issue since I have switched to this. Works absolutely flawless, Very good purchase.
