what causes a bent shift fork?

hey,
i was just wondering what causes a bent shift fork...heres the story
so my eclipse started to not want to go into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears last week so i brought it to the local transmission shop and they said it had a bent shift fork.. so i got it back last night and i works fine again,
thanks,

Resting your hand on the shift lever can cause it to bend, or trying to force it into gear when it doesn't want to go.

Yep, slamming it into gear is what will cause it. Normally they break though, since they are cast aluminum and don't like to bend much.

It sounds like shifter cables or the intake is getting in the way, 2nd 4th and R are going forward so the cable could be bad or the linkage is hitting your intake.
