Can someone explain to me how the a/t tranny works compare to a manual tranny?

My threads on the torque converter and end clutch now have me confused.....

A/Ts use centrifugal weights to switchs gear ratio's.

Ok, maybe I should clarify. Can someone put it into terms I'd understand? (Simple, simple, simple)
