Master & or Slave

My clutch master & or slave went bad today! I had to take the work beater truck home! I tried bleeding it with no luck. tried twice. The fluid that came out at first was pretty black as was the stuff in the reservoir. I started by sucking most of the fluid out of to start with all new fresh fluid. & bled it till it had no air & the fluid was clear... still no luck, so I think I need a new master cylinder & I might as well do the slave @ the same time. Grrr what fun!! Do you think I can get the parts @ O'Reillys? Do you have any other ideas why I can't get it in gear.

Thanks!

if your bleeding it, and fluid is coming out, the master cylinder is working and more than likely is fine. I'd look twards your slave, or clutch first

I also thought that this was gonna be a sweet dominatrix thread before i opened it :(

Re: Master & or Slave

Even if the fluid in the reservoir was dark?? or is that just beacuse of the rubber hose degrading? Ill try the slave first. Fairly cheap part. :)

Yeah, I wasn't thinking drivetrain parts at first either

Get under the car and watch the slave cylinder while someone presses on the clutch. You can see the slave push the clutch fork from the outside. If that is working then your clutch is toast probably. Does the clutch pedal feel mushy or anything?

probably just the slave... with the car off I can put it in gear & with the clutch pressed in I can start the car...it starts rolling as I start it.. I let it.. and then when I let the clutch out it engages quickly. Just not enough pressure to lift the heavy plate thats in it, or thats what I'm hoping to be able to fix with replacing the slave. :)

The disks go bad a lot. The link didn't work.

If it is a 1g, then I would go with the Beck/Arnley, only a few bucks more.

There is a Southbend DXD in that car. Another way to see if it's one of the cyls is to pump the clutch. If you can pump the clutch 3-4 times and then hold it down, and then shift/put the car in gear, then it is probably the slave cyl.

Do what JET said and have someone pump the clutch while you're under the car looking at the slave cyl. Make sure the rod is moving a good inch back and forth as they push.

In my opinion its best to replace both as long as you're at it. The added pressure from the new cylinder may be enough to cause the "good" cylinder's seals to go bad. These cars are all old, it never hurts to freshen things up, especially when they are vital to your car moving :)

I'll look I think its the slave, but when I pump it it does nothing still wont engage. pretty sure the master is making pressure. the master could almost empty the reservoir in three bleed pumps while I bled it.

Is the firewall all wet underneath the master (up in the footwell)?

I remember when my master went out, my footwell carpet is still stained from all the fluid that got everywhere.

Nope, no master nor slave replacement that I know of. The car always shifted really nicely when I had it. My 1G on the other hand, I swapped both out on that. It's not too hard, just see if you can pinpoint the problem with some of the advice given here.

Well I think I'll do both, just to be safe. Murphys law, if I only do one it will be the other. When I looked at it when my friend pushed the pedel it went out a little then drifted back in a little without moving the pedal .

I just went through this with mine last week. Fluid in the footwell, black gunk in the reservoir. Wouldn't shift and would grind.

MAP is able to get good prices for you and they have a nice SS line kit also. Otherwise Checker was cheaper last week for Beck/Arnley.

I just flushed mine to hold it over until I get the parts. Mostly works. I only drive 4 miles a day so it wasn't too big a risk.

I work at checker and i can get both for you at a discount
