Well my PTE scm-61 has shat on itself now for the second time. The original turbo lasted all of 1900 miles and the replacement didn't make it that far.
I'm feeding it from the filter housing. Actually both sides are plumbed with AN lines, #4 on the feed and #10 on the return. This is the first aftermarket turbo I've ever had any issue with and my old stand by turbo seems to last on the same car with no changes. I've read stories where other people have had problems with the PTE stuff yet it seems to work fine for the majority of people using them. Now I'm at the point where I don't trust PTE to rebuild it or replace it again. Anyways I'll probably sell this one off and someone can rebuild it while I move on to something else. Maybe I can get FP to build me a non-ball bearing 3065. |
That sucks. Are the seals gone?

My PTE 50 trim worked great for 8k miles, hopefully my SCM61 will last good too. I also ran it off the filter housing with a -4AN line. I did use the old front case with 67k miles on it though. I am sure that kept the pressure lower than a fresh one.

Are you sure adequate oil flow is present? I've read where several turbo's have failed due to collapsed or restricted oil lines.

did you doublecheck to see if your feeding from the right spot down there, wasnt it one sends clean oil and the other sends dirty?

It has nothing to do with cost and everything to do with surge and power delivery. I'm able to get 20psi out of the PTE by 3400rpm. That much power coming on so quick is asking for driveline problems.
Ball bearing turbo would probably spool 500-600rpm quicker and that's going to surge and break shit. Granted the FP turbine housing and compressor housing is quite a bit larger than the PTE and should slow the spool down a bit. I would estimate a non-BB 3065 would spool 100-200 rpm slower than what I have now and the BB 3065 would probably spool 100-200rpm quicker. |
I can pretty much guarantee that the bigger turbos from FP aren't going to surge on any normal DSM motor. Out of all the turbo manufacturers out there, I trust FP the most.

I called FP today and the guy on the phone was kind of a tool. He was my only option to talk with and didn't seem to know much of nothing. Never got a solid answer as to the non-BB 3065 and he didn't seem very interested in selling me a new CHRA to get my turbo going again.
My second call was to Innovative and I'm getting my new turbo through them. |
