Opinions of engine build up
Since people are talking about cams, I figured would post something up about some engine build up plans that I had questions about.
People here have had much more experience with parts and combos and I want to make sure I have the right set of parts together. I am running on the stock block but just got done putting on Well here is the list anyway 1990Eclipse 6-bolt motor APR head studs New timing belt Blance shafts eliminated Evo 3 manifold running on stock intake 255 fuel pump GM MAF-MAFT Greddy Front mount intercooler ACT 2600 clutch and flywheel For engine management I am going with a MSII system. I know people like the DSM link and there is more support for it but however I like the idea of putting the computer together myself and tuning it. So my question is how much abuse will the stock 6 bolt take? I figured I might as well run it close to the limit of use and when I am at that point it will be time for me to take the engine out again anyway. So with that in mind. What turbo should I go with? I want something bigger then a Evo 3 16G and I am thinking of a 50 Trim For cams I am thinking BC 272/272 but wanted opinions or see what else people like. I don't need this car as a daily driver, just looking for something fun on the street and the track. It is my fun car and I intend to use it that way;) anyway I will start there and see what people thing. Also anything else that I need? 4 bolt conversion is on its way also Thanks!! |
Re: Opinions of engine build up
I'd say do the 272's, maybe some springs and retainers if you plan on revving over 7500k and then from my experiences with the 50 trim, if you are ok with a little more lag I'd reccommend a 60 or a 60-1 for that little bit more airflow. Either way that should be a fun set up.

Re: Opinions of engine build up
Well, a 60 trim flows less than a 50 trim. I would do an SCM50 with the 272's. I had the same setup as a 2.0 and it was very fun on the street. I would strongly suggest against doing the MSII. After having the AEM, that is plenty difficult and it much more tailored to a DSM, with wizards and most things preloaded. If you want to tune every little thing, get an AEM. If you want to do basic tuning and just have a car that runs good, get DSMlink. There might be a few megasquirt maps for a DSM that you could get a hold of.

Thanks for the advice! I would like to go with the SCM50, is the ball bearings worth the extra money? I would like to have a good reliable turbo. I will pay the extra money knowing that the turbo can take a little more abuse. A couple more questions I have What size injectors should I be pairing these with? Do you think it is worth going external gate? If so I have the Evo 3 manifold. What place can I take it to so I can have a flange welded on? |
Re: Opinions of engine build up
I wouldn't do BB for a 50 trim, it spools plenty fast like it is. The difference is probably small. I had my 5 knob SAFC if part of the 50 trim's life, then went to the AEM. You would be fine with a newer style SAFC. If you do a SAFC, you want injectors sized correctly. I used 660's with mine, you could maybe go up to 750's, but that would be it unless you want to do E85.
I would go external gate, you would want to do that off the O2 housing, not the manifold. Take the money saved from not going BB on the turbo and get a nice O2 housing with external gate. 38mm should be plenty. My 50 trim lasted me quite a while and went to a new home, then about 3 more the last I knew. My SCM61 has been great also. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. |
