Turbonetics Rebuild or CHRA Swap?
My little brother's Turbonetics 60-1 took a crap. He thinks he needs an exhaust wheel, the shaft, and new bearings and seals. Evidently the Turbonetics stage 3 wheels (with larger 5/16 shaft) have been discontinued and replaced with F-1 wheels, which will not work with his exhaust housing. So he has been told he can either replace the exhaust housing and update everything to F-1 spec, which would supposedly cost him 7-800$, or he could upgrade the center section to a BB Garrett T-series CHRA for about $900.
Is there any reason he should or shouldn't do either of the above? Which would you recommend? |
Re: Turbonetics Rebuild or CHRA Swap?
How about buying a more modern turbo? The 60-1 sucks at life, we could price him a new PTE turbo, it would be a little more then the rebuild but worth the money, or search for a used turbo.

Buy a different turbo.

The 60-1 is an older outdated turbo that have mostly been replaced by 61mm based turbos that spool up the same and make more power. I wouldn't recommend getting a turbo rebuilt, 75% of the time they fail again very soon after.

I personally would buy a FP turbo! those are well worth the money! I know from experience.
