Yesterday I made the mistake of yanking out the speedometer cable from its housing when removing my gauge cluster.
So today the project was to locate the housing on the transmission and get it working again. Just as I located it, the factory jack (only one I had) gave way, tipped over, and sent my 3000lb van pummeling to my chest.
After about 1-2 minutes of screaming for help and trying to lift the weight off my skull, two girls happened to walk by. They were able to lift it up enough for me to squeeze out. Good timing, as my muscles were about to give up on me.
A liter of blood, stretcher, catscan, and 15 stitches later, I'm back at my computer. Scariest thing that's ever happened to me. And the last time I go under a vehicle without more stands or people.

SuperSleeper 02-15-2004 11:36 PM

Thanks everyone. The doctor did a great stitching job, and I'm feeling much better already. I was very lucky.. and very stupid. Please, everyone, always:
1. Use the e-brake
2. Use jackstands
3. Put blocks of wood behind the opposite tires
4. Anything else you think is necessary.
Someone told me he always keeps his garage door opened when he's under his car to have a better chance of someone hearing him if it does fall. Not a bad idea..
Thanks again guys--I appreciate the support.

ACRucrazy 02-15-2004 11:42 PM

Yea, always have the car in gear, ebrake, wood or somthing behind tires, and if i remove a wheel, I put it under the car, so if it falls, the wheel will save it.

Goat Blower 02-16-2004 12:13 AM

I'm surprised this is the first I've heard of this happening. I still get nervous being under a car, and I'm a safety nazi. I always use two very good jackstands, make sure the parking brake works and is on, and I gently rock the car side to side and front to back once it's on the jackstands just to make sure they're mounted securely. Glad to hear you're okay.

Matt D. 02-16-2004 12:17 AM

Use REAL jack stands, not the POS that comes with the car. And when you use them, use them in pairs. Lift one end or side of the car at a time, not just one corner.

Glad to hear you're okay, Dane.

SuperSleeper 02-16-2004 12:41 AM

I don't suppose this circumstance qualifies for a lawsuit? ;)
Thanks once again everyone.

ACRucrazy 02-16-2004 12:49 AM

Prolly not, get well!
Chris

JiN 02-16-2004 12:15 PM

Get rid of that fuckin van Dane. It's been nothing but bad news for you. I'm glad your ok, i'll talk to you on AIM about this though.

Super Bleeder!! 02-16-2004 01:37 PM

wow dude, i'm glad you aren't dead. i can't imagine how scary that was for you when you were trapped. things like that always crossed my mind when i was doing my engine swap at 2am in my garage alone.

Jana 02-16-2004 01:42 PM

Holy shit!!! Glad you are ok Dane.

TalonFiero 02-16-2004 04:54 PM

My friend's brother died under his jeep cherokee when it fell off the jackstands.

I am super paranoid when working under cars. I triple check to make sure the jackstands are secure and that the car's wheels are chocked. I usually find a way to leave the jack under the vehicle as an added precaution.

I always try and let others know when I'll be under the vehicle.

520Talon 02-16-2004 05:23 PM

Glad your OK. I am a big believer of stands. I was under my van today and it is scary, those mothers are big and topheavy.

I dropped my talon off the small jack on the side of the road last year.
