Oil pan RTV
...another set back
I was all ready to lift motor into car when I noticed the RTV that I used on the oil pan didn't cure / vulcanize or whatever. I cleaned up both surfaces with lacquer thinner before I did it....I think it was Sunday that I put the oil pan on. I don't know if it was a bad tube of stuff or what. I used Permatex Ultra Black. It's comes in like a 9 oz tube that has a little lever to easily dispense it which was convenient. Anyway, Last night I removed the oil pan, carefully removed all the RTV on the block surface making sure not to get a spec in the motor. I spent extra time. I cleaned the oil pan all up also. A family friend owns a Dodge/Chrysler business. He sold me a thing of Kent Automotive black RTV. Same stuff he's used for years on customer cars and his race cars. When you guys lay on your RTV, how thick of a bead do you put on? I put about a 1/4" bead on the first time(Sunday). I laid it in the oil pan groove and then made a complete circle around each bolt hole. Should I go a little thicker, maybe 5/16". I don't wanna do this again. I wanna give it another shot tonight. Thanks. |
Re: Oil pan RTV
1/4" bead is more than enough, you don't want too much or it can fall off and get in the engine. Ultra black is what I normally use, not sure why it didn't work.
