Letting the DSMs Go.
 

In '98 I bought my DSM. I found out I was the second owner and I was just excited to have a newer car. (only a 91:)) Sometime soon after this I figured out I could actually make it quick. And then the obsession began. Over the years it became the only thing I would dump money into and it was always first on the list. Now I have a house, boat and Lady to compete with for DSM time/money. I find myself not going to all the DSM sites or obsessing as much as I used to. I was 18 when I bought the car, I am 27 now... maybe I'm just getting too old?

For the people that were into this for years and got out, how did you know it was time? How did you feel when you watched your years of obsession drive away with someone else at the wheel?

I don't think anyone ever "gets out" but it's often time to upgrade. With the avaialble options out there for us now we can make a pretty firm fight to say it's time for another new car with a little more comfort and also some potential.

Well, I'm done at least for a few years. I realized this just a few months ago, when I realized I should've quit 5 years ago. Too much time, blood, sweat, tears and loss of youth.

I hear ya Jed. My priorities have changed a lot. My DSM used to be the only thing I spent money on. I still have it, but now it gets a little money here or there and gets worked on sometimes. Most other things come before my car, but is still fun to rip around in and work on sometimes. I pretty much ignored it for about a year when I was at your stage, but now I am back into it a bit and it is fun again. I say hang onto it for a bit and see how you feel about it later on. It really won't go down in value.

I just knew it was time to upgrade, I didnt want to putz on the car every other day when it had its little issues. Wanted something newer, and nicer, doesnt mean I wont keep modding cars though. The type of car will probably just change every so often.

Once I have a garage Im sure a project car will ensue.

Like my brother always say to me. Why get rid of it when it is paid for. Keep it and you will regret it once in awhile. Sell it and the additction will start again. I think most people just get burn out because they work on the car too much. Let it sit for a while and your intrest will come back. But than I have been asking the same question too. When is it time to move on? Everytime I go home and see my ride. I want to sell it but when I see people cruizing around. I just want to go home and pull her out of the garage and take her for a spin.

For me I simply had to let go when attempts to find a clean shell failed.
And I felt great about it since I cut the car up into parts and last saw it on its way to be crushed.

Ok I guess I'm not that old. ;) I'm still on the fence whether or not to get out but the money and space would be nice. I'm thinking I could pick up a bike of some sort to cure the need for speed. We'll see how things pan out, I'll give it a week or two. I'm sure you're lucky to sell a nice 1g these days for half of what you have into it.
