Funding the DSM project
So I was thinking, in this day and age with inflation through the roof, gas will soon be $5.00 a gallon "hopefully not" insurance keeps going up along with the cost of living. How do you fund your projects? Meaning what do you do for a living to stay afloat and build a poitent street machine. This here is a chance to get to know other members. I'll start.
My name is Joe Aka. BluntedElvis and Im a Truck Foreman/ Labor/ Mech. for Swaggert Trucking in Elk River. I have 6 other guys under my belt that give me Migraines everyday with the shit they break when beating the hell out of the Trucks. The pay is sweet, the benfits suck, and in the summer I have no social life, useally working 10-15hrs a day 6-7 day a week, and sometimes averaging 60-75 hrs. weekley, You ask WHY!! I love the open road, everyday is something new, either it be hauling dirt, gravel, boulders, or paving the sceenery is always different, been doing this for the better part of ten years now and could'nt imagine myself doing anythig else. Like if I had to sit cooped up in a cubical somewhere getting screamed at about T.P.S reports haha I'd Burn the Buliding down. :KANE: And the best part of this is during the winter I have 4 months off to run my Snowplowing business "When it snows". |

Re: Funding the DSM project
I Live at home with my parent :). They dont charge rent so why move out. I go to college and work as a server/cook. Dont make alot of money cuz I choose to only work 5 days a week but only a few hours a day. What funds my car is working and buying cars and fixing them and selling them(only done one tho and the 2nd on its way). And also buying and selling parts(for a profit of course)

Re: Funding the DSM project
I'm a computer engineer at Wells Fargo doing home mortgage database stuff.
I usually don't fund my DSM, the only major changes I've made in the last two years have been in the past 30 days. |
Re: Funding the DSM project
I work full time doing computer shiz, and share and apartment. Im finishing my MIS degree this summer and looking for a new job so I can keep going with the plans of life. Money management is all whats its about, I try and keep unnecessary spending to a minimum so I can afford car crap or party.

For my main source of income for my project, I cannot disclose that information. However, I use whatever summer job money I have left over from the woman and schooling as well.

Re: Funding the DSM project
Money management is what it's all about for me. Recently I've had more income to throw at the car, but it doesn't change the game. You could make $200k/year and you'd still have to balance car payments, mortgage/rent, food, etc. I usually limit myself to the amount of mods I do, I usually justify it by getting 'something for myself' for xmas or my b-day (end of may, nice timing-wise). Inbetween I'll try and kid myself by saying I'm not modding by doing 'maintenance' but let's face it...18" rims w/ fresh rubber & $400 brake pads/SS lines aren't exactly doing the bare minimum...but it tides me over. Last year I gave myself cams & alky injection for xmas, but didn't install them until Jan. I will prolly do a clutch in June sometime & then pull the trigger on a bigger turbo later in the year, or maybe xmas time.
It's all about planning, waiting, planning, waiting, and hiding the receipts from Anna! ;) |

Re: Funding the DSM project
Doh! I forgot to do that I work professionally as a Network Administrator/Engineer, specializing in fixing other people's ridiculous, bass-ackwards, half-hearted, uninformed, stupid excuses for networks. It's crazy what non-IT people will put up with if someone (who's opinion they value for some unknown reason) tells them that it's the 'only way.' Well usually the only way is the right way, and that's how I do it.
....Did I mention that my boss is not familiar with this technique (doing things the right way)? |
Re: Funding the DSM project
Oh yea, and I do mail/web hosting on the side. If I'm completely honest, most of that $$ ends up going back into supporting this site :D

Re: Funding the DSM project
I work at Cartridge World in the summer. Yea that's right! Those little guys you put in your printer, well I fill em up with ink. The job is geeky but the hours are great and it pays well. I'm planning on doing a little buy and selling of cars this summer if I can make enough bank. My strategy when funding my car is just money management. If I want something, I am disciplined enough to not spend money on stuff I don't need.

Re: Funding the DSM project
Hah! Me, well I live at home with my mom now, well my roommate that is. I throw cash her way and help out as much as I can. I used to live in Fargo, about 5 minutes from SLS. I think that was about the coolest thing about living up there, SLS, wasn't into Tintmasters too much. I didn't own an Accord or Lexus, nor something worthy of 22's. I actually purchased my DSM off Fargostreet.com forums from a kid who originally bought it from K.Smith at SLS a few years back. Was working up there at Interstate Power Supply as the Tire Guy, building 22's baby, 22's! I work at a call-center now. I'm a Sup/Help Desk guy. Looking to move this summer/fall though. I need to make atleast 9.75 i have figured out and I am just under that, I feel poor with this .75 loss.
My funds are tight and I have had my DSM on stands more than on the road. It's not because it's broke though. I wanted to upgrade and didn't want to drive it into the ground so I just parked it to keep the chassis miles down. I buy tons of shit. Atleast 3 things a week. I love eBay, I'm smart on there and buy what I know is right. Shit, I got DSMLINK off there for $410.00. eBay and MAP is where it's at for my poor-ass. -Scott |

I make plastic fence.

Re: Funding the DSM project
Im the IT Administrator (actually the whole IT department) for the US division of a company called Polytec. We design, manufacture and sell High speed laser vibrometers used it measureing vibrations in just about everything.
Pay would be considered good if the cost of living in california was cheaper. |
Re: Funding the DSM project
I work at Target, hope to work the backroom this summer....the only payments I have right now are for my cell phone and insurance. Right now, I don't even think about mods except maybe a 190 fuel pump. I'm concentrating on actually making my car nice and fixing the condition of it instead of modifying.
Not to mention if I tried making my car fast, I'd just get myself into trouble. So I'm happy this way. |
