Tearing apart the tranny...

OK so i got the tranny out in my GST because i would like to see what the damage is. I am planning on buying a FWD tranny this week and just having it shipped here. There is a guy thats selling one in florida, Unless any of you guys are selling a built one (which i would take right away, pm me if you got one).
Back to the subject. So i took off all of the bolts, the top cover of the tranny, (the little one) when i try to take off the main housing it seperates from the bell housing (or whatever its called) and it only seperates about an inch and it seems like its caught on something. Anyone know any tricks to getting this tranny apart? or can someone scan some of the pages of the transmission manual on how to get the bitch apart.
thanks
Tom

It should just come right apart. Atleast on an AWD trans.

Not sure what is going on, did you try a little force?

Re: Tearing apart the tranny...

I tried using two pry bars to lift it up. It seems to be stuck on the actual shifter part.

I dont know myself since I have never done it, but if you are having trouble taking it apart, you probably arent going to get it back together. Shep will get a big box of parts in the mail and it will cost you the same in the end.
Suggestion #2 would be to actually get a copy of the manual.

Did you remove the two gears off the end of the trans? (36mm nut).

Unless you trans looks like that, you will not get the mid-casing off.

That pic has the 2 gears off, the 5th gear assembly, 5th gear shift fork, detent balls for the shift rails all removed.

Yeah i didnt take the two 5th gears off because i didnt know if it needed to be off. I got the 5th gear shift fork out though.
On that 36mm bolt it has two notches where it looks like they pound it in so that it doesnt move. do i just take a screw driver and bend the notches out again?

I am likely going to have to just buy a new transmission anyways. I was looking at one that had been built already from shep or TRE.

Re: Tearing apart the tranny...

Well i decided that im gonna pull the DIY DSMer. After pulling the tranny apart i found that the second gear syncro is tore up. the other syncros look ok, just a little scarred, but second looks like someone took a grinder to the insides of the teeth.
So i went on www.Teamrip.com and looked at their parts, and instead of buying a whole new tranny i decided that it would be cheaper and better to replace the 1-5 syncros (being that im already there why not) and switching to a double syncro second. side note: has anyone used a double syncro second? is it worth going to that?

Re: Tearing apart the tranny...

I could be wrong but the 2gs came with double synco second.

I believe the double-synchro 2nd gear began in 93 or 94.

Your car won't move again, I am not being mean, just realistic.

Re: Tearing apart the tranny...

You took it apart so you might as well just do the project yourself. Heck, i'm a banker and I do all my own stuff. My father owns a machine shop so that helps though. I rebuilt all my tranny's plus I started doing all the local dsm'ers. You will need a hydraulic press and bearing puller. It's best to shim the tranny too for proper shifting. Here is a link to the entire Tranny manual. It's all i've ever used. And... yes your 2nd gear is a double synchro. Make sure you check for wear of the hub&sleeve and the keys.

^That manual is titties, I want to print it but damn..alot of pages.

On the 2nd Geard Double Synchro - When I first got my car I tried going fast out of a stop sign and was about 5k(?) and was going to go to 2nd and !*@($&(*@$(*&GRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIINDDDDDD*(*&#(*&$(* . Scared the bejesus outta me, I sent my trans to TRE and got the Double Synch. 2nd Gear and Now I can slam it into 2nd from anything, 4th-2nd etc....

Id get it.
