Results from evo cam install & alky

So, it appears that I now have plenty of fuel (for now) but for some reason the alky injection was not behaving like I expected it to. Anything above 24.5psi was knocking, so we ended up just leaving it there for now. Note that this is only about 2psi more peak and 1psi in the upper revs more than I was running on straight 92 octane. I'm not even convinced that it wasn't the -1 degree temps (17degrees in the dyno room, I think) that let the car run more boost and not the alky. Needless to say I'm gonna get my hands on some methanol and try that instead.

The cams, the cams the cams. HKS 280's. Nice power improvement throughout the powerband. I am very impressed, and can see why so many people use them. Overall the car picked up about 40 lb-ft of torque and 44whp peak. Take a look at the power band from 3200-4000 rpms, damn! Also, at 5600rpms, the car picked up 52whp!

Just in case anyone doesn't know, I drive this thing anywhere from 40-100 miles per day on average, so it sees plenty of 'fun' time...and oh yea, I AM RUNNING a cat!!! (that may change)

This is with:
Buschur 3" TBE w/ high flow cat
BR 3" intake w/ cone filter
BR i/c piping and deluxe FMIC
Walbro 255 fuel pump
SMC alky injection kit running denatured alky from home depot
HKS 280 cams
ARP headstuds
stock injectors
stock o2 housing
stock clutch (for now)

Special thanks to Shane @ DB Performance for installing the cams & headstuds and turning the car around to me in less than 36 hours!!!

PS--guess what I saw sitting in the engine bay @ DB:

my old car! It still has the Super 20G on it that was owned by Shane, Brian (Slowwhite), James, Me, retard iowa boy, and now the current owner. I miss it!

All right, read, flame, trash, etc, enjoy!

Congrats! I'm pumped to see such great numbers from the cams.

Nice numbers. Those cams really do a lot for the powerband, damn.

Sorry, I should have noted: the before/after dyno plots are from round one of modding last fall. I've now added cams, fuel pump, and alky, nice and simple. 300whp on the stock turbo makes me happy!

Nice numbers, now I need another ride!

Weak sauce. (hey, you said flame ;) ). J/K, that is awesome that just cams (basically) & tune will do that for you.

Why not just run E85 and have alky all the time? :p

Very nice. I would like to know what differeences people are seeing when switching from the 272 to the 280 cams.

Re: Results from evo cam install & alky

What's more interesting is seeing people drop these hks 280's and swapping in revolvers w/ valvesprings & retainers. Some are seeing like 50 lb-ft of torque over the 280's!

That extra 50 ft/lb claim is probably only done in house at Bushnuts, and probably performed by Fat Boy Friedman. YMMV

I would like to see this revolver at work. Scheides - you must sell these wimpy 280's and get the revolvers.

Re: Results from evo cam install & alky

Hah! Maybe whenever I end up taking the head off. For now the 280's are dandy. I've heard AEM is key to getting the revolvers to idle too...

Re: Results from evo cam install & alky

So, an update. First off, the car is solid, and has been since it left DB. I took s2kracka and m3guy for a spin the other night, I'm sure they can attest to its gutsyness. No it does not have 500whp, but DAMN it is fun to drive like this! The car seems to just jump ahead of anything else on the street, and with the ACD in 'Tarmac' mode, the rear end is squirrelly with just me in the car. I swapped out the fresh set of BPR7ES plugs gapped at .026" with some BPR8ES plugs gapped at .022" based on what I have read others use w/ alky. The car feels about the same at 24.5psi, no change.

I picked up an openport cable to do some logging with, and found some interesting results. Bumping up the boost about an 1/8 turn on my MBC looks like it brings peak boost up to an even 25psi and all is stable/dandy (knock count in the 1-2 range). If I do a run through the gears from first or second up to about 80 or 100mph, 0 knock, clean as a whistle every time. If I do a third or 4th gear pull, that is when I see a bit of knock, and it's only at boost onset.

If I bump it up a little more to 26, knock count rises. It's probably at a safe level, but it's higher than I want it to be (knock count in the 5-8 range). This is where I'd like the car to be, and it should be able to be leaned out a bit (current afr's are 11.2:1, see my other thread). At this boost level, IDC's hit 93% at 7300rpms, so I am not running out of fuel on my stock injectors.

If I crank the boost goes up further to 27-28psi, knock count goes up to 11-12 and the car even hit fuel cut once (or boost cut, not sure if there is a difference).

So, I'd like to be at 26psi with 0 knock, maybe 1-2 like I am at now, but I'm not sure what exactly is holding me back. There are people all over evom claiming to be running my exact setup with denatured alcohol and running 26psi no problem. Now, maybe they haven't logged their car and get a little knock at that boost level, I'm not sure. At this point, the only thing I can think to try is to swap out the alky for meth, or a 50/50 meth mix w/ H2O. The thing is, chemically they are so close there shouldn't really be much of a difference.

Does anyone have any input?
