Project Drag Talon

Well over the last few months I've done some thinking about goals and such along with things to make my car different than some others. Since about August/September I've been wanting to make the front end of my car tubular. Just had'nt researched it enough to do so. Finally in Nov I got a decent size shop with a couple buddies and decided this is the time to do it. So I started ripping the car apart, planning new fabrication and deciding on things I want to happen for next year.

Well here is the start of it. I gutted the car, cut out the backend and got everything ready for a cage. Two weeks ago (Nov 28th) I decided to order a 10pt cage from S&W racecars. I also orderd the "sportsman conversion" which X-braces the door bars and rear bars, converts the cage from a 10pt to a 12pt and also includes rocker bars to run along the floor to connect the window bars to the main hoop. Then I came across the "funny car conversion" kit... Said to hell with it and bought it too cause I like the way it looks and its not often you see a car with it. I like to be different!

So I ordered the cage on a tuesday, had it in my hands on friday of the same week. They had to custom bend/make all the tubing to fit my car and ship it to me from PA. Definately very good customer service and quality if you ask me! Overall I spent $440 for all the tube, and $214 for shipping. Came out to be $654. After the discount they gave me I saved $230.

Here are some pictures of the car before/after the install. There are also a lot more pictures in my gallery.

Its completely finished, I still have to put the rocker bars in and start on the front end. I was waiting to figure out suspention but I think an Evo suspention would work perfect for my application.

My original goal was single digits... Then I decided to up the goal a little to an 8.99 or faster. I dont think it will happen but thats why its called a goal. I'm hoping by mid season I'll be in the 9s.

Full tubular front end, keep AWD, 42r on Methanol with nitrous and 10:1 compression are just a few of the plans I have in order.

You should really make a video out of the whole process. Somebody posted one up on the forums the other day and it's pretty sick! Nice work so far!

Looks great. Are you going with a 2.4 or a high-revver?

Re: Project Drag Talon

2.0 that will rev to 10k.

I've done a lot of thinking about the 2.3/2.4 and it seems as if the only people that really do it are AMS. They make good power on the dyno but for some reason they "dont" run it at the track. Maybe they just dont like the numbers, who knows.

Plus, I wont have to look for a 2.4L crank and block. I have a 6 bolt block and crank to my disposal.

Its actually not that bad at all. I will need a removable steering wheel but other than that, its pretty easy.

Re: Project Drag Talon

So this 360 degree protection thing, is that side-to-side 360, like side to side, top to bottom? Or front to back? or like an entire globe of protection? Anyone care to elaborate on this?

Also, how the hell are you supposed to get into that thing? Obviously the steering wheel would need to be removable, right? That cage is just sick.

Did Magnus Motorsports stop using the 2.4 in their 2G? It won the Quick 16 at the last Shootout.

They're still using it as far as I know. I've yet to hear of anyone actually finding the safe rev limits for a 2.4. Lots of speculation and internet chat, no hard numbers.
