weird noise?

Lately when I start the car after it has been sitting for awhile I hear a *knock* *knock* noise coming from lower part of the engine on the timing belt side. It'll do it every so often at idle but once I drive the car for a bit and let it sit again then the noise is no more. I hate to think its crankwalk but just want some input if anyone would have any ideas. Thanks.

Mods: '99 eclipse spyder gs-t
-upper & lower intercooler piping w/ SSQV
-evo3 big16 turbo
-n1 3in turbo back exhaust
-SAFC(settings still all at "0")
-NGK plugs and wires
-valve cover breather
-boost & a/f gauge

If it turns out to be crankwalk it looks like I'll most likely be doing stroker kit or should I just go do a 6bolt swap (2g pistons and 1g rods)?. Any stroker kit out there you would recommend over the other?

If the noise is clearly coming from the timing belt area, you'd need to pull that off and see if anything is touching or broken in there. Seems unlikely but possible. If it's rod knock on the first cylinder, you can rebuild, replace or upgrade. A "stroker kit" is simply a 2.4 crank in a 2.0 block. It's easier to simply do a 2.4 which is not a "stroker", so you don't have to clearance the block or even line bore the mains. Get in and check your stuff first, crankwalk has different symptoms than what you're describing.

Oh okay. Guess I'll have to take a closer look into that area then this weekend and see what I find.

If it turns out to be rod knock which of the choices as you mentioned would be a better way to go rebuild, replace or upgrade? I would like to keep my car running well since its currently my only way of transportation at the moment until I can find myself a beater.

If you've got the skills, rebuild would be the cheapest option. The easiest option would be to buy a rebuilt motor since it doesn't look like your setup needs a built motor. Shoot me a PM and I can give you some more details on a rebuilt motor, I'll have one done this week and a second by next week.
