anyone have a guage to measure crank endplay?
i forget what they are called. They usually have an analog readout and a magnetic base.
I wish to borrow/rent one from somebody for a day; as i'd like to check the crank endplay on this motor before i button it up finally. thanks |
Re: anyone have a guage to measure crank endplay?
John said you can use a feeler gauge between the thrust bearing surface and the crank. It is a bit harder, but still works.
Check both sides to make sure your bearing isn't in there cock-eyed. John thinks (off the top of his head) that the spec is .002-.0071" Something middle of the road should be fine. |

yea i did that, couldnt fit in anything larger than the .005" feeler. i just want to double check with the proper tool because i'll be DAMNED if this thing has to come apart again!

Magnetic Base Dial Indicator.
They have cheapo's down at Northern Tool Co that will get you in the ballpark if you're not wanting to spend the coin on a Starrett, or similar. I was in a bind and bought one from there one time and I think it was ~$30 for the dial indicator and the base. |

Wow, good info. I didnt even price check because i figured the cheapest one would be over 100 bucks.
Northern tool is 10min away! :) |
