Winter Wheels & Tires

So who's going to be rolling on what this winter? I'm going to be in dire need of some new tread since the current 18s will just suck on anything and everything snow and ice related. I'm going to go after a packaged of 17s, just going to see where I can get the best deal with the season coming up on us.

Re: Winter Wheels & Tires

I picked out some Dunlop Wintersport M3 snow tires for my Dad's GTO and they are very impressive tires. They are great in the snow and on the ice, but still handle better than a lot of "performance" all-seasons in the dry.

*edit* I just checked Tirerack and the M3 is definitely the tire I'd choose of the 17" ones available for you. Looks like wheels/tires will cost you about $1500 shipped.

I'm gonna roll on the stock 17's on the evo w/ Continental ContiExtremeContact All Seasons (came on the car when I got it). Next summer I may swap on the stock Advan's, otherwise I'll find some 18's to roll on :)

Scheides, talk to Peter, he has a set of snow tires that'll fit on EVO wheels I believe and I know he'd let them go cheap.

I do have some Hekkapiltas but they say they are all seasons... even though the treadpattern is really aggressive. The guy I bought the M3 from, used them as his winter tires. They are 225/45/17. PM me if you want to know the price as I dont want to clog up this thread.

Not sure how much tread is left exactly but they would definetly be good for another season or more.

I also have a set of 17" dunlop studless snow tires, that were actually off of an evo, they have decent tread on them. LMK.
What about blizzak's for snow tires? whos tried them?

Kracka 10-30-2006 12:18 PM

Re: Winter Wheels & Tires

Blizzaks are great winter tires (the best when it come to snow/ice), but they wear out very quickly and are more expensive. They make a few differnt versions for winter performance, snow, ice, etc.

Re: Winter Wheels & Tires

I'll never buy Blizzaks again, they are just too soft and wear much too fast. They are great in the snow, but if I can't move around in the snow in other decent tires with AWD I will just stay the fuck home. :D

Re: Winter Wheels & Tires

The Dunlop M3's as mentioned above seem to wear really well, my Dad's still look practically brand new after one winter; I'd say they should be good for at least 3 seasons. I had some cheapie WinterKings or something like that on my Talon ($60/each) and they were amazing in the snow, I got 2 full winters out of them. I out hill-climbed my old roommates Grand Cherokee Quadra-Drive with new all-terrain tires in the deep unplowed snow of Duluth (keep in mind the two Talons I used them on were both FWD).

Hey Chris, do you remember where you got them? Was it tirerack or something like that? I'm in the market for cheap winter tires for my laser.

CVD actually picked them up for me from Discount Tire, but I know Tirerack used to carry them too. If you can't find those, try the WinterForce snow tires.

I believe I have the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice (205 width). They worked great last winter and I still have two seasons left, but I don't drive all that much.

I have a pair of New Balance 381's for this winter. I wonder if performance summer tires are on sale in the winter?

Re: Winter Wheels & Tires

From what I have heard the Hekkapiltas are the way to go for a semi performance snow tire. I know mnsubaru just did a huge group buy on them and prices seemes very reasonable.

Personally I have used Winterforce snow tires, Blizzaks(ws-50) and i loved them both. The winterforce snows wouldnt be available in a size for the Speed though.

I have also heard great things from an SRT-4 owner about the Hankook snow tires.

What size are you looking to go with? What size are the stock 18s?

I will be on my 18's all winter that is why I am tying to get the evo done
other wise I have some 2g gsx rims that I would have to take off the summer tires and put on some all year tires on them. I hate that I can put on my stock 16in spyder rims with the big aem brake kit. (sence I had to retap the knuckels with a bigger bolt to better hold the adaptors for the kit and cant go back to stock)

I think we are going to rock out with the 225/45/17s and look into a package with Discount Tire with some Hankook tires.

I've got Hankook Ice Bear snow tires on my 240, and they work really well, considering it's rwd with a clutch type LSD.
