Transmission wont go into reverse
Ok i have a problem with my 96 talon tsi awd manual i just got a remanufactered transmission from mitsubishi graveyard and i put it in like a week ago. Everything did work fine but now i have some trouble with the reverse it doesnt have it it doesnt even fell like theres a slot for it. I was driving earlyer yesterday and i backed out of my driveway and it was fine parked it and it didnt have reverse anymore, plus my fifth gear only stays in if i'm on the gas if i let go of the gas it pops out. Please give me some info on how to fix this beast, i really like driving it but it just wants to keep crapping on me.

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
Did you re adjust your clutch peddle? If your clutch does not fully disengage, it will not let you into reverse. Also, try putting it into 1st gear first then reverse.

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
My clutch is really touchy, it engauges right when you let your foot off the petal. O and now my fifth gear is completely gone since i let my brother drive it, all you hear is grinding, this is what he said (Its fast but your fifth gear dont work.)

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
Like Bode said, first, try adjusting the master cylinder rod on the clutch pedal. I believe you adjust it out if it's grabbing too close to the floor. Then come back and tell us your findings.

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
5th gear popping out is a transmission assembly issue. There is a nut that holds the gear stacks together, that backed off.
Not even feeling the reverse slot is usually an assembly issue. The bolt that holds the reverse gear "assembly" in place could be missing or backed off as well. 99% of the time those 2 problems are transmission assembly issues. Clutch adjustment issues effect ALL gears, not just reverse. |

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
Take off the end cover, there are 2 36?mm nuts. Those are suspose to be tightened and then "dented" so they don't back off.

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
Just curious what your "rebuild" consisted of? Also, was it a fresh rebuild or was it a used tranny that had been rebuilt at one time?
I googled mitsubishi graveyard and didnt see anything on their site regarding rebuilding services. |

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
I already went through this once, exactly how you are describing.
The problems with having no reverse and no 5th sounds like you damaged the tranny, the causes for the damaged tranny are due to one or more of the items below. I damaged my tranny because of these things, hope it helps you. Things to Check/replace: VERY FIRST THING. Turn your adjustment screw on the peddle so to the right if your looking at the master cylender part of the screw, or the left if your facing the peddle. make sure it is almost all the way out. Do not take this step lightly, make sure you dont just skim over this because this can save you a shit load of a headache. Then try shifting it. Go under the transmission where the slave cylender and make sure that the throwout bearing fork is either in the center, or towards the driver side. If its towards the passenger side then you either have a problem with the pressure plate, the clutch, or the shift fork, either way your taking out the tranny. IF you are gonna take out the tranny check the clutch disk. Mine was destroyed. Check the pressure plate and the pivot ball. you might as well replace the throwout bearing just to be safe (and save a headache later on. MAKE SURE the bolts that hold the tranny to the block are all very tight, especially the one that is just above the half shafts. (I had this problem, the bolt kept vibrating out and would cause the clutch not to shift due to the pressure plate pushing the tranny away from the motor. ) Make sure that this part of the tranny has no gap. it should be pressed up against the motor, This bolt is the only one that goes from the motor to the tranny, (as opposed to the bolts that go from the tranny to the motor) Check these things and im sure you will find one of them problematic. |

He also said that the clutch engages right off the floor which is a tell tale sign of loose bolts or clutch adjustment. |

How is the shift movement? Do you have full range on the shifter assembly?

Re: Transmission wont go into reverse
Taking apart a transmition and putting it back together right is not an easy task. I would not recommend it unless you seriously know what you are doing, and have the right tools to do it.
