Tire destroyed
Tire got a nice hole in it on 394 west, pretty good sized too, enough to see through it. Since they are low profile, didn't notice right away, just though it was driving a little funny so I stopped at a tire shop. Then I get to the goodyear and they say it can't be repaired because the hole is so bad and the sidewall is destroyed. Yay, out $150 for a new tire. For once in my life I'm glad I had the spare along.
Will ~10k tread difference on a 225/40/18 Khumo 711 matter much for one tire on AWD? |

Ebay a set of tires! Or maybe you can find a used 711 on there, lol. Good luck mang.

Re: Tire destroyed
Nevermind about the 10k miles, I fogot I had winter tires on from Nov - Mar. They probably have 6-7k, I just put one on, I'll worry about upgrading all of them next year.

Re: Tire destroyed
Don't mix and match tires on an AWD, especially summer/winter! You'd be better off putting the whole set of winter tires on now.

Re: Tire destroyed
Yeah, no need to have ice when it's already cold.

Re: Tire destroyed
I think you misunderstood me. I have four of the same tires on now (711's), three have 6k miles, one is new.
My previous post was pointing out that they didn't have 10k miles on them because I forgot I was driving with winter tires for some of that. |
Re: Tire destroyed
I get it now. I figure, in order to make the tires the same size, you need to remove rubber from the culprit. I know only one way of doing that myself. Put the tire on a VW front right wheel.

Re: Tire destroyed
Well the wear is not that great, I'm guessing about 1% or less of the circumference, which I don't think will matter.

Re: Tire destroyed
I cant imagine the slight difference in diameter being a big deal at all. For saftey maybe just put the new tire on the front with the open diff. It would be as if you were going around a very gradual corner at all times and I cant see that hurting anything. That plus the fact that I have never heard of any kind of failure related to different tread dept tires, which is amazing when you consider the average cheap asses and retarded consumers. Plus you see all kinds of people rolling around with one badly underinflated tire which has a bigger effect on overall diameter than tread depth.
Anyways, cliffs notes: Dont worry about it. It's not going to hurt your car. It has an open diff for a reason. |
Re: Tire destroyed
^^ I agree to a point. I doubt that you will have problems with the few amount of miles that are on the tires. It is a DSM with a few miles, everything isnt as tight as it was when new anyway.
I have however witnessed t-case issues with an Astro van and a Jeep due to having new tires on the rear and almost shot tires on the front. |
