Title transfer question

I'm going to transfer the title on a vehicle that hasn't been used in 11 years. I don't want to be responsible for 11 years worth of tab renewals, so I need to get a signed statement from the current owner that the vehicle has not been used over that time period. Has anyone dealt with this before? I remember doing this on a car once, but there was a form that I had filled out and had the owner sign. I called up the DMV and they said there was no form, and all I needed was a signed statement.

I want to make sure that I don't get owned when I transfer this title, so I want to see if anyone knows of a form that I can download to make sure that I have everything I need when I go in there. A part of me thinks that whoever I talked to at the DMV was misinformed, or just plain didn't know what they were talking about. I might have to just stop in there and ask them, but I hate waiting for 20 minutes to ask a 30 second question.

This wouldn't be such a big deal, but the owner lives in Fairmont and I want to take care of all of this in one shot without dragging it out and bugging the owner with maling and signing forms, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Title transfer question

I was told I needed a signed and notorized statement, which I decided wasn't worth the hassle and I'd rather just pay the 2 years of back tabs (motorcycles are only $13.50/year).

Yea Im in the same situation.. my bike hasnt been registered since 1989, I finally got the title from the original owner but have not taken it there yet.

The DMV told me to make sure you write down the stamped engine # on the title too otherwise they wont process your title.

I just got a car that had 03 tabs and I just paid the regular 35$ or whatever.. Maybe 3 years is alot different than 11 to the DMV :P

I've never been charged for backtabs. My chevelle was sitting for 7 years when I bought it and it was the standard fee, nothing extra. Same with my bike.

That is crazy that you have to pay for back tabs just to transfer a title. I never had to pay for anything like that. And for titles not transfered watch out...if you get pulled over you can get a ticket for that.

I have skipped years many times, I just had to tell them the vehicle was broke and not driven. I didn't need any signed statement or anything. I did it about 3 months ago the last time.
