Tranny case

So my tranny casing has a small crack in it. It's towards the bottom kinda by that black crossmember thing that is right there under the tranny. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it possible to get it welded? Or am I just plain screwed?

The rear end differential?

Since he keeps using the word tranny, I would assume his transmission housing is cracked.

Brandon, I think I have a parts transmission somewhere if your casing turns out to be junk.

Transmission. There's 3 parts to the whole tranny casing I believe. The end cover which houses the viscous and 5th/R gears. Then you take off the middle casing to expose the rest of the gears and components. That big casing that everything is in, that is what the crack is in. Right towards the bottom of the tranny by the crossmember. I'd try to take a picture but it's not easily viewable.

If it turns out this can't be fixed or welded or anything, then I suppose I'll have to find a new tranny.

It would come down to where in the case its cracked, and how deep/long the crack is. If its small and not in a or around a bearing race or somthing like that it could be fixed. The big problem would be tearing down the tranny to the mid case and cleaning it up and finding a good welder that knows what they are doing.

Did you figure out why the case cracked? I've dealt with that twice in my DSM life... once when my FRONT diff blew up, and when a pin fell out of my center diff and the ring gear sent it through the case. Goodluck, and hope it's an easy fix.

The tranny is still in the car. I have no idea why it cracked. It is towards the bottom, so maybe I bottomed out or something and caused it to eventually crack.

Re: Tranny case

Is it on the bell housing or the tranny.
If it is the center part: Are you leaking any fluid?

I have a tooth that is missing in my tranny. it makes a loud knocking sound. I think it is coming from the fifth gear. Is that easy to replace or do I have to take my tranny out again.

We have lots of spares in the shop, it will be far cheaper to take one of them off our hands then have it welded I'm sure :) I'm pretty certain this leak is stemming from whatever was causing your sound in 5th gear...

Re: Tranny case

like they were saying, it all depends on where the crack is to decide weather or not it can be welded. if it can't, i'd just find a junk tranny and swap cases if i were you

The tranny case is shot. I think I found out why it cracked. My own fault, shouldn't have impacted those bolts on.

Ahhh, I was going to say theres weld bead about 5 inches long on my tranny case. I was quite enthused when I found that shit.... it still works fine and I have a spare so I hope it doesnt blow the fuck up.

You should talk to Stephan (Greasemonkey0018) He has 2 Tranny's in his garage that are busted and he might sell you one cheap and you could tear the internals out. i think one is a GVR4 tranny though.. PM him and see what he says.
