14b boost question
What’s the most boost that the 14b and stock intercooler reach safely?
THANKS. |
Re: 14b boost question
I wouldt do anything over 18 psi.
From my experience, I started seeing knock after 18 psi and there was nothing I can do about it. Then I added an fmic, and was able to do 25 psi with 0 knock. |
Re: 14b boost question
do you know what the knock was.and about what psi fuel cut is at?

Re: 14b boost question
If you can tell me all your mods. I can help.

Re: 14b boost question
all i got so far is a MBC

Re: 14b boost question
18 psi is the absolute most you want to do with your lack of mods.

Re: 14b boost question
so should i start looking for a fmic?

Re: 14b boost question
I would get a 2g mas first and a boost gauge.
I had mas over run with the stock 1g mas when I did anything around 16psi. Then I would look into fuel upgrade and management first before an fmic. As the Fmic wont help you as much as the fuel upgrade & management. From my experience, when I was on the sidemount with my 14b, I had killed my fuel pump running 18psi. And remember, when I was doing above 20 psi on the 14b, I had 550cc injectors and an SAF-C and fuel mods to help me do above 20 psi. With the 450cc injectors, you'll start to over run the injectors at 18psi. If not, around that mark. Let alone if you still have the 1g mas, you'll run into mas over run too. Also I would look into getting an exhaust, as anything above 16psi, you're stock exhaust wont be as efficient anymore. For right now, since you have no mods whatsoever, I'd leave it at stock oost, since also that you do not have a boost gauge to monitor how much boost you are doing. I would also look into getting a logger to monitor your knock. Every car will react differently to modifactions. |
Re: 14b boost question
Get rid of that manual boost controller and get a electronic one or at least a dual stage controller. I would not push past 16psi or you might be replacing your motor sooner than you want to.

Re: 14b boost question
^^ Theres nothing wrong with Manual Boost Controllers, they work fine. You dont need a fancy electronic one.

Re: 14b boost question
The 14B is a very capable turbo; My car has never been faster than when I was running a 14B at 20PSI with a rewired stock pump. *** Please note *** this is not recommended - I was just able to get away with it running 93 octane in my geographic area and temperature. I would recommend not going over 16psi and rewire the stock pump for re-assurance. I am assuming you have an open air box - if not that should definitely be your next mod followed by exhaust working from the muffler to the turbo. Good luck!

Re: 14b boost question
The amount of boost you can safely run depends on the gas used and the tuning.
The only electronic boost controller I would ever run is the GM boost solenoid controlled by an AEM EMS, otherwise I would always take a reliable ball & spring MBC over some flaky, overpriced EBC. |
Re: 14b boost question
FMIC should be one of your later mods. NOT something to do right away. I found a Conquest FMIC for less then $30 bucks, pipes, core and everything. So, i upgraded now figurng i'll be ready when it's needed. It only prevents heatsoak. There's not a huge performance gain, or any at all at 12 PSI.
I don't like to link other sites, but this guide i think is a very good one for what to do on moding your car. http://www.machv.com/goinfasenand.html |
