Bigger and better

So who says dsm's aren't reliable? All you need is same-day parts available!

My bastard 20g blew up on my way into work this morning, and I want to give a very special thanks to James (SlowBubbleCar) for taking the time to help me get my ride back on the road again! I limped the car back home @ 5:15pm from the Applebee's on Hwy100 & Duluth St. At 6pm, I have all of the fluids drained and the manifold off. Break for dinner to let the turbo cool down before I yank it out, and then head down to Hopkins to meet up with James to pick up my 'bigger and better.'

Yes he had already listed it for sale, but it was still bolted to a car. James took the time to help me by yanking the turbo off for me as soon as he was off work, even though he had other stuff to do. I show up at about 8pm & we finish up yanking off the turbo & shoot the shit for a wee bit.

I b-line it home, stop at DQ to keep Anna happy (and me, I guess!). 9:45 I have the bastard 20g pulled, and by 11:30 I have my new little hamster wheel installed, a GT3582RLE-M (?) I think technically this should be called a GT3582RLSM because it has the 4" inlet w/ ported shroud, but who gives a flying F, this thing is big and bad ass!

(yes, turbo helped with the install!)

running like a champ!

So of course, I ran into some coolant line leakage (my bane when it comes to turbo installs, I have no idea why) so I ended up dinking for an extra 2 hours on the thing. I ended up getting it all buttoned up, and I'll take it for a test drive tomorrow!

Sweetness and props for the fast work. I hate the turbo lines, if i had it my way I would use quick release valves like on air compressor tools.

internally gated 35R? Hopefully it doesn't creep too bad.

Re: Bigger and better

The previous owner didn't have any creep issues with it at just below 30psi. He said it might have spiked for a second but that was it. I bolted it up and never used it.

Well yeah... try running 15-20 psi and it'll probably creep to 25 or something.

Re: Bigger and better

Yea, frankly I'm quite interrested in how low it will go as well. I'm sure itwon't hold up top like an externally-gated one would, but with the big flapper, the cut exhaust housing, and my LIPP o2 housing, it's going to be interresting!

As soon as you said that you were buying a turbo in the for sale ads I knew you were going for that turbo. Good job man hope it works out for ya.

Pretty bad-ace, man. Way to repair! I can't wait to hear what you can do with that thing.

I agree with andrew. Congrats on the fast swap, a real cool story TGIF huh?

Re: Bigger and better

Thats awsome. good choice in turbos. My Internally gated 61 creeps to about 22psi above 6000. With the LIPP housing you'll probly be OK. Get that thing out on the road and give us some reports.

Great story Chris!! That was a fast turn around. I guess we'll be able to see this monster at the Cookout. W00t!

Re: Bigger and better

Maybe the DSM gods are smiling down on you or something, because without your old turbo taking a crap on you, you wouldn't have gotten this turbo, and it just happened to be for sale locally.

Good to see that everything worked out well

Well said! I'm on the home stretch here, but I need to leave for a wedding @ 5pm...we'll see if I get to take it out yet today! (crosses fingers)

Re: Bigger and better

Just took the car out for a spin. The first few trips around the block i had coolant leaking out of the coolant feed line (again! Ahh!). Checked the coolant level, all is well. Then after getting back out after a 10 min drive, no coolant leaking anywhere, and the coolant level is ok! :)

She definitly needs some tuning time. Not sure my 650's will be up for the task past pump gas, but we'll see. Second gear pulls yield max boost pressure of about 17psi, and boost onset occurs somewhere around 4500 rpms. There is a ton of power in this turbo, the sheer size of the thing makes me just giggle!

Re: Bigger and better

You will definately need bigger injectors. I have some 780's that I was going to use for that turbo.
