Pulley Kits, Worth it or Not

I am doing a swap and was wondering well the motor is ripped down if it would be worth putting a pulley kit on or not. Also if it is worth is are the ebay ones good or dont take the chance?

Worth it performance wise, no. The general underdrive pulleys do nothing but spin the accessory pulleys slower, taking less power from the crank. The pulleys are also lighter weight than the stock ones. Overall the power gained through this is negligable.

Another thing to keep in mind is the stock crank pulley is a harmonic balancer. It keeps down torsional vibration made by the engine throughout the RPM range. Most pulley kits do not offer a dampened crank pulley. Though no one will ever or has ever reported an engine being harmed from using a non-dampened crank pulley, do you want to be the first to do so?

well if you arnt going to replace it with a "performance" pulley replace it with a new dampener, when they go they usually take allot of stuff with it. satan has em for like $300 or something ridiculous like that and slowboy racing has them for like around $70.

So you are pretty much saying "waste of money there is better things to buy like a sheet metal intake?"

yes. Except, I don't even know if you will be able to utilize just yet a smim. I don't know your list of mods.

Don't go with an underdrive pulley on the crank. They seem to kill DSM engines very quickly if they don't have a harmonic balancer integrated in them.

You can probably find used pullys from people on here for free. You can probably reuse you old ones though.

You can use the samp pulleys for a 6 bolt.

Brand? With integrated dampening characteristics?

That one looks exactly like the OEM one.

Re: Pulley Kits, Worth it or Not

The OEM one isn't any more than 100 if I recall correctly, from the dealer. I just had one seperate on my Galant and needed to replace it.

And yes IMO aftermarket "performance" pulleys are not worth it. No power to be had plus less power to your accessories(ac, ps, and alternator).
