Seized? Ahhh...
I was driving yesterday night on 35W N and I all of a sudden my rpms just drop dead and I see my oil light come one (I thought "Oh no. WTF just happened?!"). I put it into gear and let off the clutch hoping it'll start back up. No luck. So I have to pull to the side of the road (left side). So I tried cranking over the engine and it wont crank over at all. I look under the car and there are no signs of a massive oil leak or anything falling/dripping from under the car. I dont think the engine actually blew, because I didnt hear anything break. It was all of a sudden a quick couple studders, rpms drop, oil light on and one worried driver :D. So I had it towed to my brother's house (closest place atm) and it costed about $110. Then I just told my parents and they're all pissed off because this car has done nothing but break from the time I bought it :D. So I either need a new engine or buy a new car (another DSM?). Anyone have a 6bolt for sale? Or anyone selling a 90-91 Talon Awd? I still have to talk to my parents about this and see what they wanna do. I'm sure they'll want me to get rid of my car and buy me a new one. They've been saying that to me for a year now. Now I have another problem to worry about. :(.

Is there oil in the engine?

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
Check the timing belt?

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
I saw you on the road last night! with a minivan behind, I was gonna stop! On the way back I was gonna stop, but by that time the tow truck was there! So yeah good luck getting this all sorted out.

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
Yep, that was me. I called my brother to take out some cash for the towing cost and he came to where I was. I saw a couple DSMs drive by, haha. I had my cousin (mechanic) take a look at it and we took off the timing belt cover and the timing belt was VERY loose. Yeah, the oil is still full. So now I'm looking for a new engine (6bolt) or a '90-'91 Talon AWD :D.

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
Check the simple stuff first, I'll bet you $10 your engine is fine.

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
That happened to me. If your timing belt is loose it won't be as bad as you think. Just some bent valves. Probably won't even have to get a new engine. Just rebuild the head or a new one. It is easier to get a new head. If you look around they are not to bad for $$$ and cheaper then getting it rebuilt.
I know how parents goes, I have 2 dead cars getting fixed in their driveway right now. http://dsmstyle.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: Seized? Ahhh...
I am guessing it is something electrical. All the cars I have seen with broken t-belts or bent valves would still crank though.

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
check the crank position sensor..those like to come unplugged...

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
Check over the basics before you think the motor is gone. Try cranking it over by hand.
|
Re: Seized? Ahhh...
I hope the motor is fine :D. How would I crank it by hand? Never tried that before, so I have no idea how to do it :(. The car is at my brother's place in Blaine and I live in Stp so I'll have to take a better look at it when I get the chance. Kinda sucks that my brother has no tools at all at his place. I could barely find a tool to take off the timing belt cover!

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
He means turn the engine by hand. Use a 1/2" drive socket wrench or breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. If the engine spins and you don't hear a nasty metal sound, it's probably something simple.
You can't crank an engine by hand unless you have an old Model T or old radial airplane engine. |
Re: Seized? Ahhh...
I just talked to my dad and he says just find a new engine and throw it in, so I guess I'm gonna go find a 6bolt and just do that and hope the 6bolt isnt gonna fuck up on me anytime soon. But I'll try turning it over with a ratchet and see if its fine or not.

Re: Seized? Ahhh...
Why throw a new motor in when you dont even know whats wrong with the old one? Maybe your starter is shot and wont spin the motor? Sounds like something simpler than a seized motor.

Figure out your problem first, because that will take less time than finding and installing a new engine, and will almost certainly be cheap, plus you will learn a thing or two about how to actually fix cars. |
