90 awd tranny vs 91+ awd tranny

i have a 90 tranny that needs to be rebuilt. On sheps site it says call for the 90 pricing? is something different between the two?

Yep, 90's are the red headed step child. If you switch to a later tranny you just need to swap the output shaft or Tcase.

No, what are the pro's and con's of a 90. For some reason i heard the gears are at a "higher angle" and harder to shift at higher rpms than a 91+. Are the center diffs inherently weaker than a 91+? is there any quirks that would make me not want to run a 90? I'm not going for 10,000 rpm shifts here. I've got a stock motor, stage 2 crower cams, and a 17c for making horsepower, so no horsepower either.

id get a 91-94 23 spline tranny / xfer case + shift linkages. It's cheaper to have rebuilt and it's easier to find 91+ trannies. I think 90's don't have a double synchro stock so it's more work for him to make a shep 2nd gear synch = costs more. I'm sure there is other shit.

90-92 doesn't have double syncro 2nd. Also, with a 90 in a 91-94 car, you will need the shifter cables from a 90, and the shifter lever/shift lever base from a 90. Lotsa bitch work. I just put a 1990tranny/xfercase/shift stuff in my 1992.

just wondering, i had thoughts and do some people do a 2g tranny on the 6 bolt motors? i heard a couple(2-3) years back that a "good" condition 2g tranny was pretty good?...read that online someplace

If you are looking to shift with ease do the following, works everytime!
1.get a core
2.send it to shep
3.pay the 1100 dollars for shipping and rebuild(all said and done)

You wont have any grinds into reverse, grinding noises on the highway, and the ability to shift easily into 2nd. My friend has a stock tsi awd and ended up with a shep tranny in it with a dxd southbend clutch(can't remember the specific one), killer combination. If i dont get a hand on these two, i wont be driving a dsm this summer. we'll see how it holds up to light modifications.

It's an extra $300 bucks to mod up a 90 tranny the right way because he has to swap out extra parts. I think it's the 1st gear shaft.
