Aftermarket cam gears... necessary or not?

Before anyone jumps down my throat, I did search, but I had a difficult time finding a thread related to cam gears and I found no answers. My question is: How necessary is it to get adjustable cam gears with new cams? In the next day or two I think I am going to finally order those 101200's and I just wanted to know if its really that big of a deal to get them. Thanks guys.

Not absolutely necessary unless you are going to get the cams degreed.

Yeah, but will I need to do that to get a good tune?

They are nothing more than a tuning tool. Some cams will be OK without them, some will not. If you get HKS or FP cams, they are not a neccesity. You might want them for other brands though.

I had them from my 2.0L, so I used them to degree my cams to the 2.4L since both the block and head where machined.

I degree'd mine and the cams are timed straight up, but I had to re-notch the degree mark to compensate for the difference between the 2 engines. But at least I know they are timed correctly. Once I get the car to a dyno I will play with the cam timing to get the best power curve.
