Alternator squealing
Well here is the problem whenever I start my car after it has sat more then a couple of hours the alt. belt will scream but then stop once the RPMs drop alittle bit. But if the car has only been sitting for about an hour or less the belt wont scream. If anyone has an idea on what might be going on please let me know thanks.

Re: Alternator squealing
it won't screech because its warm and grippy. tighten your fricken alternator, it takes like 2min.

Re: Alternator squealing
it is tight

Re: Alternator squealing
Mine does the same thing. It does yours go away after around 1 min.

Re: Alternator squealing
If you think it's tight. Tighten it up more. There's a difference in having a belt tight and having it dsm perfect tight.

ouch ouch ouch...
do not keep tightening it... if its already within the standard deflection something else is squealing.. not the alternator belt! You can test it by loosening it first.. loosen the belt first... here is my storry. Every time i pulled into krispyKreeme my belt would scream and whine.. i kept tightening, every one of the dsm'rs was like tighten that belt for once!!! it didn't go away no matter what i did. up until i went to do balance shaft elim. my timing belt was soo tight!! i had to do the timing replacement all over again after 14k miles.. we had hard time taking off all the puleys and belts.. it didn't start squealing until like 10k miles later tho Did you do timing belt job recently? or within last year. |
Re: Alternator squealing
No i havent i just got the car but i know the kid who had it before and i know he didnt do it either

Re: Alternator squealing
You might have it tight enough but the belt may be shot. If it is glazed over or saturated with powersteering fluid you might just be due for a new belt. You dont want to over tighten the belt cause that could cause a squeak too and possible put unneeded load on the alt bearings. Also, are you sure it is the alt belt or could it be the PS belt? Try turning the wheel when it is squealing to see if it gets louder or quieter.

Re: Alternator squealing
the PS pump isnt even hooked up to it... and it does it when the car is rolling and the rpm's drop down under 1k.

Re: Alternator squealing
I told him I'd look at it. He could have a bent bracket causing the belt to be slightly slanted. Either that or it's not tight enough. Shoop bring your car to my work.
the alternator was changed like 3 times. I'm not sure if anyone thought to replace the belt. It's a 10 dollar part. |
Re: Alternator squealing
the belt was replaced at the same time the alt.'s were replaced... thought you didnt have metric tools at your work, take that oil cooler off yet??
|
Re: Alternator squealing
It could be the bearings in the alternator itself. I've had that happen on my car last year. Just a thought. I would recommend replacing the belt and setting the right tension first though.

Re: Alternator squealing
the alt was replaced like 2 months ago i dont think it would be the bearings already
|
Re: Alternator squealing
unless the tension was too much before, and they got messed up... but i doubt that.

Re: Alternator squealing
Where'd you get the alternator from ?
|
Re: Alternator squealing
A autoparts store, i belive it was Checker....:P

Re: Alternator squealing
Well the one I took off of my car was from Autozone I believe and it was only a year old when the bearings went out. Bought one from Advance Auto and that one lasted about 8 months and the voltage regulator went out. Guess I just have back luck with alternators. So I guess what I'm saying is that it is possible you were sold a defective one.
