Dynoed the car. Carnage!

So on Saturday I took my car to a local shop that has an in ground dynojet setup. Real nice guy and pretty decent priced too. Anyways, put it on the dyno and I was running pig rich the first couple of runs. Finally got it tuned decent by bumping up boost and leaning it out, still running 11.2-11.5:1 on C16 trying to lean it out by getting more boost out of the turbo.

At first I was running 15psi just to get a decent setting on DSMlink. BTW: 1600cc injectors work perfect with DSMlink if anyone was wondering. Decided to bump the boost up to 25 after the first couple of pulls. Then to 30. Made the first pull at 30psi and BOOM! The turbo explodes. Made 438whp and 357ft/lbs Tq at 6500rpms. Never saw 30psi on my boost gauge. Hit 26 then it blew. I looked back at the DSMLink log and I was flowing about 47lbs/min and I hit 26psi by 6300rpm where it died. The turbo is rated at 85lbs/min so I still had a ways to go!

Here is a video of the carnage and the dyno graph. Note: Watch the car by the passenger headlight when the RPMs really start winding up. You can see everything shift and the car move about 1/2 a foot on the dyno when the turbo went. Pretty interesting if you ask me. Talked to the guy I got the turbo from for warrenty purposes and I will have a new one in my hands by the middle/end of next week. Hopefully this doesnt happen again. I have a feeling it was a defective part.

Isn't this at least the second time your turbo has blown?

Yep... Completely different turbo and completely different side. Last time the exhaust wheel broke off, this time the compressor housing blew apart.

Last one was a FP58 (same specs as an SCM61), this turbo is a PTE T70.

EDIT: It is actually the 3rd time I've had turbo problems. The FP58 blew up twice with the same problem.

Its all good, I'm getting a new turbo so I'm not mad at all. If it happens again I'm gunna be pissed. The only thing that really bugged me was I couldnt race yesterday. I was lookin forward to that.

Did it compressor surge at all? The Supra guys didn't run the old Garrett T70 compressor wheel at all because of compressor surge with that wheel on smaller displacement motors.

No surge at all... It was so smooth all the way thru the log. I can post the log if anyone wants to see it.

That sucks. I wonder how many bits and pieces of that compressor wheel are stuck in your head and engine.

That's what densely packed bar-and-plate intercoolers are for, to catch any stray turbo pieces.. :)

Damn! I have been wondering for years what those do.:))

Sorry to hear about the problems, hope your back up and running soon.

Re: Dynoed the car. Carnage!

Exactly... Most the pieces were in the lower intercooler piping right before the intercooler inlet. Nothing actually got through it from what I found. Also, the GM maf has a screen type netting that wouldnt allow anything else through and that wasnt damaged at all and there was nothing stuck in it. I got lucky.

Thanks for the manifold Mo... Works perfectly and looks pretty good too. Very happy with it.

thats horrible. How can any turbo just blow apart like that?

I dont know why I have such bad luck with turbos. Oh well. We'll see if it happens again!

No man... I will never take my car there for anything.

It was at Zenke Auto in Nodine. About 15 miles south-west of Winona on I-90.
