Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
7 bolt heads are good :) there is a ton of information to go over on this topic, like port sizes and flow vs velocity etc.
but yes, i would keep the head you have. |
Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
I would ditch it and go with a 6 bolt one. I heard the 6 bolt ones flow a lot better in factory form. Make sure you are able to get a good one though. I swapped 3 "good" 6 bolt heads on my car last spring and had to keep switching because they gave me bad compression results.

Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
A 1G 7-bolt head is superior to a 1G 6-bolt head.

I am assuming he has a 2g 7 bolt head since his car is a 96, so wouldn't a 6 bolt one perform better? That is what I was looking at.

Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
depends on what you define as better. if all out drag is the goal, maybe. if drivability and part throttle are your thing, stick with the 2g.
also worth noting is evo heads have even smaller ports than 2g heads, do they seem to have trouble making power? |
Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
I don't have any problems with part throttle or driveability and I have a 1g head on my 2g with a 6 bolt. I didn't even notice the difference and my head is ported, has springs and retainers and cams.
I almost bought mikes crazy ported 2g head a long time ago. |
Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
i'm not saying a ported 1g head will give you problems, it will flow a lot of air but have a lower velocity through the port. i don't want to type out an essay, because the subject matter in this case is huge. just go do some reading on the subject and try to get away from the idea that bigger ports and tons of porting are its at.

Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
come to think of it, there was an article in Modified awhile ago written by Martin @ AMS about this very topic. from what i remember, in summation, it said that the 2g head outflowed the 1g head to about 7k rpm, after which the giant ports on the 1g finally did something.
so for all out race, when all you care about is the 7-9k rpm powerband, the choice is obvoius. for everything else, the choice is again, obvious :) |
Re: should i keep my 7bolt head?
so for small turbos like the 16g you would be better off with a 2g 7 bolt and bigger turbos would be better with the bigger port head since you need more of the higher rpm's?
