Driving with a seized turbo
Car: 92 Talon AWD Auto
Mods: 3" turbo back, MBC. Hey guys, my turbo just seized on me (13G). The car doesn't smoke or anything like that, just has no power. I am looking to drive the car to MN wednesday so I can put on my SCM61/Manifold/Wastegate from Eau Claire. Think I will run into any problems? Thanks Noah |
Re: Driving with a seized turbo
Yes. You have to have some way to relieve the exhaust pressure. I believe you can burn your valves otherwise. You could take the WG arm off but I'm not sure if thats enough.

Re: Driving with a seized turbo
Disconnect the boost controller and plug the line so your wastegate stays open as much as possible. You shouldn't have any issue driving it, just keep your foot off the loud pedal and take it easy getting here.
You could also remove your upper IC pipe and attach your MAS and flex pipe directly to the TB, the elbow should have about the same diameter opening as the stock turbo, about 2 1/8". |
Re: Driving with a seized turbo
Thanks guys. You have been very helpful.

Re: Driving with a seized turbo
If driving it is a must, I'd disconnect the WG flapper arm (or wire it open) and stay off the gas as much as possible.

Re: Driving with a seized turbo
If the shaft breaks you could loose all of your oil thew the turbo, which is not good. Find a ride do not drive your car.

I'm in eau claire too. If you don't have a ride, I might be able to go.

Re: Driving with a seized turbo
that's true noah..we pulled cher's turbo apart, and that was the reason his ic and exhaust was filled w/ oil..I'd try not to drive it..take sarah's celica you stud! put the parts on at your place..? that work?

Re: Driving with a seized turbo
Ok, here's what I did. I unhooked the wastegate flapper arm, and tied the wastegate flapper open. I also disconnected the oil feed line, and pluged the hole. I am not able to get my hands on the manifold I was hopping for anymore, so I need a way to get a wastegate mounted on my car. I am impatiently waiting on my 2G mani to get here, and possibly have the gate welded on to that.
