Longer Slave Cyl Rods
Well it's time to looking at the GSX pretty soon come April. For you guys that have aftermarket clutches, have you had to use longer slave cyl. rods ever?
I don't really consider myself to have a full time problem. However, the couple times that I took it to the track last fall, when I would 2 step it at the line at 5750 rpms, I could feel the car wanting to crawl a bit. Last spring, i put in a new SouthBend clutch, master & slave cyls, S.S. Clutch Line. Like I say, I don't have any disengagement problems. It's only 2 stepping at high rpms. It's like I don't have enough throw. Thanks guys. |
Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
Don't bother putting on a bandaid unless you've exhausted all the real options.

Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
Thanks Steve, I'll have to get a buddy to step on the clutch while i look at the travel underneath. I forgot to add in my first post, it has a new pivot ball and clutch fork as well. Would be nice if it's as simple as just adjusting the master cyl rod just a fraction. I know it don't take much. A slight turn makes a huge difference.
*** The reason I asked is because of what i read on ExtremePSI's website. "When upgrading to any clutch, these extention rod are a must need due to the stock one not being able to disengage fully." |
Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
We have those in stock if you need them.
But like Steve said, don't use one unless you have looked at all the options, they are a bandaid. |
Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
Hi Josh- I just got in from the garage. I took a yard stick with me and measured from the floor to the point the car started to roll forward while letting off the clutch. I was getting around 1 1/2 to 1 5/8"
What would either of you two say is normal? Thank you. |
Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
?
If your clutch disengages fine, and doesn't drag, and engages/disengages within the acceptable range, it is fine. The point of the longer clutch rods is for more "leverage" against a clutch cover. You usually need the leverage due to: 1) Failing old worn out clutch system/components. 2) You have some crazy clutch system and need a longer throw to compensate. FYI: We bought out QPR's inventory of the longer clutch rod. I think they are about $20 each. |
Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
I like it a lot higher than that. I usually adjust mine so it disengages at about a 1/2 of the total pedal travel. I might mess around with that this year to find the best solution for NLTS using my new twin disk.

Re: Longer Slave Cyl Rods
Thanks much Josh & Steve.
I'll probably just tweak the master rod very slightly and see if that helps. I did search and found out why a longer rod should only be used if necessary. It could cause constant pressure on the bearing causing premature wear. I'll exhaust all other options first like you said. I don't think it would take much adjustment at all because when i'm 2 stepping at the lights it crawls very slightly. If I were to deep stage it could possibly cause a red light though. The clutch is pretty new (last spring). Eventually the problem would cease to exist when the disc gets thinner. |
