Wheel Vibration
 

After doing my rear breaks and putting in 5 new studs in my front left tire, I hapened to notice that my CV shaft had a torn boot. I never really said anything to anybody and since that day whenever I am driving 60-up I get a steering wheel vibration that comes and goes in a pretty good constant loop and I do not know what the problem could be. I heard it could be the boot on the shaft but who knows how long it has been like that. If anyone could help that would be awsome.

I hope you put the studs in the hub assembly and not the tire. :-)

A torn boot won't cause a vibration, especially if it wasn't there before you did this work. Check your work, it sounds like your wheel isn't seating properly on the hub, probably something to do with the studs you put in.

Most wheel vibrations at 60 MPH are caused by an imbalanced wheel. Either that or it could be the studs in wrong or not seated properly

First of all, get a new CV shaft in their since your current one is damaged. Also, get all 4 wheels balanced (this should be a regular maintenance item for everyone). Check your studs too to make sure they are seated/installed properly. Hell, might as well get your car aligned too (another regular maintenance item that is often neglected).

Well it was kind of a pathetic way the studds were put it, I had to use a bunch of washers and then used one of my lug nuts to zip them on. After the 5 were done I was told to use the tire the rest of the way to tighten them.

I figured a balance would be something that should be done, but one thing is, is that the rears have hardly any tread left on them and while the fronts are better they too do not have that much left. I think it's around 1/4 inch or less. Would it still be worth it to balance them until I get new tires? I probably won't be getting any until my other car is paid off.

My cousin Steve said that it was aligned before he sold it and that it should still be good.

So in all get a free day and take what I have done apart and make sure the studs went in right? Leave me some other things I should maybe check for while I am there It would be awsome of any of you. Thanks.

Thats actually the correct way to do it. Im not sure what your lug nuts look like but did you use the taperd(round) on the washers to zip them on? If so you could have damaged the taper and that could cause the wheel not to seat properly.

That could be a possibility That I did. although I only used one nut to do all 5.
