Engine Rebuild
I know I've posted other areas, but I would like to know how much you would charge to determine what's wrong for sure and to possibly rebuild an engine if I had the parts? Or can you order that too? If you've seen my other posts, I spun a bearing so I guess I'll need a new crank too. I've got $2000 to spend on getting my car back to running, what can I do?

Re: Engine Rebuild
At this time we don't offer OEM rebuilds. Our minimum for rebuilding motors is Weisco pistons on Eagle rods. With how far these DSM's are pushed, it does not make sence to rebuild it using OEM rods or pistons.
Our shortblocks start at $2700 w/good cores. This is a Weisco/eagle combo with king bearings, all machine work, new front case, and I believe a gasket set. Your crank might be okay, it just depends upon how bad the bearing is. You can have it turned to a "10/10" if its that bad, and have it re nitrated. Otherwise a good crank goes for the $100-200 range on the used market. |
Re: Engine Rebuild
Ok, so if I go with the rebuild you guys offer and I get a used crank what am I looking at pricewise? Also, I my block needs to be rehoned and I need bigger pistons, price will obviously go up, so what would I be looking at then? Any info helps a lot. If I don't get a new block I was going to get some Eagle rods, 95 Pistons, and a new crank and have someone rebuild it. Would you rebuild it if I have the parts?
Thanks Tom |
Re: Engine Rebuild
Our price includes a .020" over piston. The used crank pricing all depends upon what it needs. I think to polish up the journals is like $45ish.
We won't do the 95 piston on eagle rod. Forged pistons on forged rods only. We can have it "rebuilt" if you have the parts, but in the end, it usually costs you more money. Our pricing is for parts, machine work, and labor...all things we have control over. Odds are the block is fine and the crank just needs some work. |
Re: Engine Rebuild
Ok, I'm trying not to be annoying and pester you, but what am I looking at for a rebuild the way you guys offer it and if the crank needs some minor work? Can you estimate anything for me so I can have something to look at money wise? Once again, sorry if I'm asking too many questions.
Forged rods/pistons and work on crank + install = estimate? That + rehoned cylinders + install = estimate? Anything you can ballpark is great. Thanks |
Re: Engine Rebuild
The shortblocks are starting at $2700. This is for an assembled shortblock. You drop off your motor, you pick up a good motor. If the block is bad, it costs extra (whatever a block is at the time). If the crank is bad, it costs extra (whatever a crank is at the time, or whatever it costs to make it right).
Bring us your dead motor + $2700 (plus tax) and when we are done with a new shortblock, you can pick it up. :) |
Re: Engine Rebuild
Ok, well I'd asked what it costs, labor wise, if you can estimate to put in the parts you offer or what I give you. You said you could do it, unless I'm mistaken. I'm not interested in getting a new motor or shortblock uless I buy a cyclone engine from eBay.

Re: Engine Rebuild
We don't offer that service, sorry. Without us sourcing the parts and inspecting the machine work, we can't guarantee it is right. We use to build motors with "I found these parts" but those days are long gone. So are the days of us using OEM internals.
I am sorry it was a bit confusing as to what I wrote. We only offer this as a package, as shortblocks are VERY labor intensive. We have been sourcing the parts for a long time, and we know what does and doesn't work. I know who to get pistons from, and what time of year to order them. I know who is going to be my best source on rods and bearings. I have this all in order, so I can get parts year round. I can sell your the parts individually if you'd like to have someone else build the motor that isn't a problem. Our average 4 cylinder shortblock ends up with something like 40 hours into it by the time its done. So...I guess labor could be $3230 (40 hours x $80.75, which is the dsmstyle.com discount) if you want to just bring in parts. Otherwise, our shortblocks start at $2700 w/good core. -Weisco pistons .020" usually -Eagle rods -King bearings -balanced rotating assembly to 2 grams from accessory pully to flywheel/clutch -all machine work done. (line honed, and bored with torque plate, all surfaces inspected and machined). -boiled block -needled block -painted and spec'd block -ready for head and accessories -new oil pump/front case (installed). -mirage stub shaft balance shaft "elim" All you would need to do is put on your oil pan, your filter "housing", and all accessories (including timing belt stuff). Then add a head and away you go. +$100 for the turned down balance shaft and a perfect balance. (Stage II). The average core is around $200ish. This is a complete block (block and caps) and good crank. If you want the assembly balanced fully, bring in your crank pully as well as your timing belt cog and your flywheel/clutch. So in a nutshell, we offer the shortblocks cheap because we have a system that we like and works. Whenever we have to get out of our "shell" for them, the costs go up 10 fold. |
Re: Engine Rebuild
That covers it, if you have anymore questions about our motor building and why we do what we do, feel free to PM me.

Re: Engine Rebuild
That's just what I wanted to hear, and that's all the info I need. Thank you very much. I'll probably be calling you guys in the future for a new shortblock or if I order a cyclone motor.
Thanks Again Tom |
