Axel leak
92 tsi awd 5spd
I just installed a '91 GVR4 tranny. Before I put it on the car, I put on new axel seals (and yes they're on correctly). The car has a tranny fluid leak coming from the passenger side axel. I installed it correctly, it snapped into place and wouldn't pull out. When I tried to remove it, it easily moved 1/2 inch out with just my hand. It wouldnt come out any further as if the c clip on the axel was still where it needs to be (locked into place). Is there any differences in the GVR4 axels ? To me it seems like the c clip/groove needs to be closer to the passanger wheel on my axel and it would be perfect. Any ideas? or am I just installing this wrong? Maybe the c clip is worn? I looked at my old tranny, and it appears that both places where the axel go are the same. Thanks everyone, I'm really excited to get this thing back on the road! |

Get a rubber mallet and just go at it. If you think its in there, its not.

Well actually, when the axel is "installed correctly" there is still about 1/8" play that shouldnt be there. Oh well I'll try this again.

It still leaks. The axel seal is not at fault, and the cv shaft is installed properly. I don't know how fluid can leak past, but somehow it does.

I had this same issue and was told to just really hammer those axles into place. It worked. Just because they dont come out easily doesnt mean that they are in correctly.

Ok, I've installed CV shafts in my AWD DSMs before with no problems. I know how to install them correctly.
I asked my uncle, a 20+ year experienced mechanic. He instantly said the front diff is worn. That makes sense! But that pisses me off. Maybe it needs to be shimmed? Ahhh I don't want to pull my tranny again :( |
