-Mods: K&N, Magnecore Wires, NGK Plugs Problem: I left my car back at home a couple of weeks ago to get the gas tank replaced. Since then my parents have been driving it off and on. Of the numerous times they have driven it, the same problem has arisen: the car flat out runs like shit. From what they've told me, things will be going along fine and then the car just acts like it wants to die, sometimes to the point of killing. My Dad took the car to work today without problem, took it to lunch without incident, but then when he came home it tried to die on him over three seperate occassions. The same problem happened once to my mom the other day. The problem also arose once before getting the gas tank replaced so I was initially thinking fuel filter but the fuel filter was replaced when gas tanks were swapped. I doubt it is the fuel pump since it is an intermittent problem. I was thinking possibly the FPR or the TPS? I'm going home this weekend so hopefully I will be able to reproduce the problem and get a better handle on the symptons and what is going on with the car when the issue arises. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!! |
Did you put in a new tank or a junkyard tank?
|
Well I have driven with my TPS not hooked up at all, on accident of course. First, it will throw a check engine light. Second, the car always thinks it is idling, so the ECU is going to freak out and start adding and taking away fuel based on O2 and you are going to get weird outcomes(on mine I was getting AFR's that bounced from 10:1 to 19.5:1 within a second). And lastly, it ran awful because the AFC never knew that the car wasn't idling so it never corrected the airflow so I couldn't run even 5psi without it going rich, then bogging down/misfiring, then bucking real hard as the car attempted to burn off the excess fuel on the top of the pistons.
That is what a faulty or disconnected TPS should do, it turns out I missing the little metal clip that held the harness in, and after a few good bumps it worked itself loose. I have since replaced the clip. As for a FPR symptom I am not really sure, but I hope I was able to help with the TPS stuff. :goodluck: Matt |
The gas tank was a junkyard tank and I had it installed by one of, if not the most reputable shop back home.
The car does throw a CEL when it is running like this. Otherwise it does not throw any errors when it is running normal. |
Hmm thats a tough one. Maybe find someone with a logger that can check the CEL?
Otherwise do a few things to limit the possiblities like fuel filter, boost leak test, check for vaccum leak, make sure Mas is plugged in tight and other connectors. |
Fuel filter is brand new and I will check the connection on the MAS when I get home. I guess I don't quite follow you Peter on how a boost leak or vaccum leak could cause an intermittent problem like this versus a continual issue?
|
It might not have anything to do with it, it might... But it will factor that out and then you can move on.
Alot of problems Ive run inot Ive had to do a few other things in order to figure out the real problem... so thats why I suggested that. Also maybe your caps in your ecu are going. That can make some goofy shite happen randomly. |
are they running 92+ octane gas? sounds stupid.. but once you hit the boost with shit gas it runs like piss. its possible they filled with "premium" but its 90 or 91 octane.
|
i would also check the O-Ring that holds the fuel pump tight agains the housing inside the fuel tank, mine wore out and it did the same thing. every once in a while it would run just shitty and sometimes it would run perfect. figured it was that once i took the plate off and found the fuel pump to be some what loose in there.

Could it possibly be the coil pack? I had inititally ruled that out since it is such an intermittent problem but someone here at work suggested mentioned that the coil pack could be the problem.

does the car just start to misfire when normal cruising down the streets and also right away when the check engine turns on?

ok then the CEL you were throwing was the random misfire code. i had this in my car a couple times before. i will be home this weekend so if you want to bring it to my house we can go through it on saturday during the day if you would want to.
