Project Winter Beater

Some of you may have seen it for sale here, but i bought it from matt j.
When were loading it on the trailer i see a pile of oil under the car so i figured it had a hole in the block. Owell at least i get my trans. so i bring it home and dont even look at it till the next day. after some hose clamps it held coolant, OK OK getting better. put oil in, and what do ya know it holds oil and pressure in both oil and coolant. Awesome so theres no hole in the block!!! i check all around and fix some small stuff here and there. OK its time for a compresion test, holy crap its 180 across the board. Im getting happy at this point. I hunt down the main issue to be a beyond dead fuel pump. so i get one from a buddy for free and what do ya know it starts!!!!! so now im just waiting to find some intercooler hoses for it and making it look decent.

Here is what i had to work with
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...IMG_0449-1.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/IMG_0490.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/IMG_0483.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/IMG_0486.jpg
Took a wire wheel and destroyed 18 years of midwest rust on the suspension and repainted them
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1657.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1659.jpg
cleaned and shampooed the interior
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ater/zazaz.jpg
It runs!!!
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1648.jpg
Roughed up that flat black and threw some gloss black down. I think the black is tacky but its just a fun car that wont be the prettiest, its a beat up twin of my 92 talon.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1638.jpg
I got rid of the nastiest rust and painted the bare spots. like i said not the prettiest but not to bad
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ater/zszsz.jpg
since im not going to buy rims for and i want to keep with the twin idea i painted these rims black to
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...eater/werw.jpg
Ive been cleaning up the bay to look nice while waiting to find some stock intercooler pipes, it will get cleaner then this trust me, but a big start. ya the oil drain is leaking but that to will get fixed
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...eater/fdfd.jpg
Im going to try black with this engine, got to do something different then my other car.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1676.jpg
in the shadow of its brother
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1654.jpg
dont have any intercooler pipes now so i have it run staright with no intercooler. its on stock boost its more then fine "we dont need no stinkin intercoolers". aside from rip in the flex pipe it idles and runs pretty good for not having the base timing set.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11082015.jpg
like i said the old pump was the problem, and was the worst looking pump ive ever seen. i got a free one from a friend but didnt have a strainer so i had to make do, its ok you can laugh.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11052041.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11061043.jpg
When my 1st dsm got floded i lost anything that was fabric pretty much. so in restoring that car i made some center console side panels. I didnt want to waste the time to fimd some and i was rewrapping everything in the car anyhow. Those have held up for 2 or 3 years now. The winter beater needed the same center console panels, so i used the old ones as patterns and made some new ones. super simple: cloth and cardboard.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1678.jpg
the black ones are the old ones and the gray ones are for the winter beater
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1679.jpg
because this is a super budget build, im also going to be making my own hatch cover and ill be covering that to obviously
panels in action. they are just set there so they are not screw in yet
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1686.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1687.jpg
I dont have a 2 din bezel for the stock radio so for the moment i made a panel for behind here so it wasnt a giant hole
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1688.jpg
made the panel for my hatch cover. the black one is different because that one has a cage. I still need to make bracing for it but it will look the same
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1684.jpg
traded a spare 1g BOV for a new knock off type s, not sure what im going to do with this cause everything on the car so far is stock.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1689.jpg
Friend brought over a better "non-intercooler pipe" that had no kink

Re: Project Winter Beater

enough of that nonsense i went and got the pipes and threw on the intercooler.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11111724.jpg
dont worry i got a real 1g bov that will eventually get on
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11111725.jpg
here is the hatch cover, still has 2 small openings on the sides where the trunk panels are supposed to be but i think ill pass on caring that much

How did you get the engine bay so clean? Just hit it with a power washer?

Goddamn its crazy seeing cars like this and cars like Alpha's at the same time. If you know what you are doing and some luck, you can get a pretty nice car for not alot of $$.

Keep the updates coming dude.

first off you need emissions gone andthat fire wall pad removed. then i rinse, degrease with bucket and rag, rinse, wash with car soap, rinse, dry with large towel. i use a small electric power washer for all rinsing.

Looks awesome! Now you just gotta get rid of that ugly worthless ABS.

Re: Project Winter Beater

so i decided ill try the ebay BOV but couldnt deal with that nasty purple
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11132004.jpg
So i decided, since im going to want some music at some point, i would clean up the stock stereo. it was all rusted over and i just cant let something like that go back in my car, so out came the wire wheel again and cleaned it right up
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11181717.jpg
i kept the paint off the heat vent just a lil clear coat
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11181748.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/11191241.jpg
Because of a power steering leak i did pull out all the ps stuff, very messy job, but it really cealns up the bay. It will be a pain inparking lots but if it dont work and i dont need it, im taking it out. I am also probably taking out the ABS as well.

Fuck yeah we're taking your ABS out this weekend! I got the prop valve for it. Just have to fab up a couple lines.

It's easier and far better looking to just get the 4 factory front lines. Bending tubing always looks like crap unless you've got the nice benders and some skills. Don't forget to take out the wiring harness and ABS controller in the passenger side B pillar.

I've already done one ABS delete on a 92. It turned out pretty good:

http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/SDC10918.JPG

What we did was re-use 2 of the previous lines and tweaked them a little bit to work. He had found the other 2 that run to the prop valve from the master so it wasn't too bad. Two lines shouldn't be that hard to fab up.

Re: Project Winter Beater

well yet another bay picture. My buddy dustin (123abc) came over and we did an ABS delete with AutoZone brakeline tools. I was suprised we got all those fittings loose. It turned out awesome, not sure what else i can rip out of the bay that i dont want.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1726.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1733.jpg
heres all the abs that got tossed after we reused a few lines
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1728.jpg
Finally got that stock radio deck in there, it had some pioneer speakers so it sounds great. Kinda crazy that a deck is working after 18 years
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1727.jpg
To go along with the battery drop i got a $25 walmart lawn tractor battery its much smaller, lighter, and still does the job
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2.../11222119a.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...r/DSCF1732.jpg
and to top it off a lil paint to make it look like the pacesetter muffler
