Mark's 1G Winter Projects

5 Attachment(s)
Just finished up my 4” aluminum exhaust this winter on my 1G and thought I would throw up some pictures. I want to drive the car on the street and didn’t want to do a fender dump, so this is a great alternative. It transitions over from stainless steel to aluminum at the back of the oil pan. Its 3.5” stainless from the turbo to the transition at the pan. I made the 3.5 to 4 inch transition to a v-band. It uses a vibrant aluminum muffler. The total weight of the aluminum section is around 13 lbs. I cannot wait to hear what it sounds like!

Looks great. Looks like a lot of new parts under there. Super clean.

Yep, I added a DSS driveshaft, a set of stage 5 axels and a new revised Shep transfer case. One of the pics has the driveshaft installed, but it measured up 2” too short, back to DSS it went for modifications.

Awesome work. I would love to get a close look at this car and learn some things.

Damn that's huge! Can you get a picture of it with a kitten in the muffler? Or maybe a black lab...

Just do a 5" exhaust.

Looks great.

That is pimpin exhaust. Love the use of aluminum.

Looks good, Mark. Is your car lowered at all, and if so, and concerns about the exhaust scraping where it goes under the rear differential?

Yes, remove it and make it 5" turbo back.

That looks really cool as is!

I upgraded the snail, it’s a PTE billet wheel on my 42R! Should work great, I have heard that one of the Buick guys picked up something like 125 whp with the billet upgrade. It’s the same compressor wheel used in MAP’s Evo drag car. The old cover and cast wheel have turned into garage art. More to come later.

This was done late last summer, but i thought I would throw them up.
Parachute pics, I made my own mount with receiver. I turned a piece on my lathe for the receiver.

And here is the finished version with the parachute mounted.

Finally what it looks like without the chute installed.

I did all of this rear end work last year. The tow eliminator kit, all poly bushings and replaced all of the control arms with adjustable ones. I had the car aligned with the rear tires straight up and down with no toe in. I also have a set of Ksport RR coilovers with an 18kg/mm spring rate in the rear. No ride quality on the street, it also sucks in the cornering department.

I just put carpet back in yesterday.

Dude I love the little mural on the wall!

Billet 42R, drool! Glad to see you're still making progress with this thing, you just don't quit!

Thanks! I like the garage art thing, my wife put that together for me. She’s awesome and she also supports me with all of my hobbies, spending tons of money on pretty much useless shit.
I’m excited to see what kind of power the new turbine will make, the difference between the cast and the billet wheel is night and day.

I’m just having some fun and the 1G is a perfect and easy platform to do that with. I have an evo too, but I’m not willing to make it a race car. It’s kind of crazy that I put more miles on 1G’s during the year than the evo, although it's easy to do with a winter that seams like it will never end.

Ha, I hear ya. I pulled my 1G out today and drove it everywhere, I forgot how much fun it is to drive, even if the exhaust is a little loud for my taste. The Evo motor build starts this week and it will end up being a lot faster than my 1G, but I'm not taking out any creature comforts out of it whatsoever, both are going to be fun drivers. Can't wait for spring.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

I changed my valve cover venting from 2 –an8’s to a catch can with a single little filter. I was filling the catch can up with oil. From empty to overflowing in one pass! I added a HLA, plugged the vents in the valve cover and drilled a new hole in the back of the head for an –an16 fitting. The machining pictures are of my new stage 5 MAP head.

I built a new catch can with much more capacity and used 2 K&N 3’ filters.

Yea the pictures were taken with my phone, it must be how they were loaded into the Photobucket’s phone app. I just hacked android on my HD2 this week, I’m new to the droid world.

The car should be running in two-three weeks, and ready for the track in the beginning of May. This winter has been a busy one.

Yep, still rocking the 91, has almost 250k on the clock. I might upgrade for next winter, the rust is attacking the rear quarter by the gas door. And two of my neighbors have hit it while backing out of their driveway's ...kind of crazy they could not see a bright red car.

DSM_421 03-17-2011 04:01 PM

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Makes me sad people have hit it, I don't get how careless and clueless people can be sometimes lol. Yea, lets just back out of our driveway without taking advantage of the mirrors and turning my head to see what is behind me.

Car was damn clean for 250k on the clock minus the rust on the driver side rear quarter panel.

Keep us updated on this blue beast and maybe I'll see you at Cedarvale again!

Great work Mark!! I'm doing the same thing to my head with the -16 right there! Maybe I could swing by and you could tap my head for a fee??? :D

It's done. I drove it about 50 miles this weekend. Everything is great, no issues. Exhaust sounds rowdy,) a lot deeper note. Cannot tell if there is any turbo spool difference. Saw 30 Psi @ 5700, that's where it was set for the first drive.

My buddy sent me a picture text of under the hood of your car at that dyno day deal on saturday. I laughed when he sent it to me. I'm like hey I know that guy. Magnus told me hes a d-bag ;)

Did you change the tune before you saw 30psi? DId it go lean so you know that wheel is making more power?

Funny, it was all v8 muscle cars and me. The car was well received for being out of place at this event. I ordered my manifold first, thanks for the heads up on its availability! I was on the phone with Magnus when you called in. Oh so close!!

No tune changes, I would need to download the log to see actual IDC since I have up to 15% of compensation of fuel in closed loop feedback, with a target AFR of something like 11.8. So it never went lean.

Just took a catch can and engine bay pic.

I took the car back out today, turned up the boost to 35psi and got the AFR's dialed in further. I took my wife out for a ride and did a 3-4 gear pull. The car is fing fast, and after I got out of the gas I looked over at her to find that she was crying. She told me that she doesn’t want to ride in the car ever again. My bad.
