Porting services

Since our local vendors/shops are no longer offering porting services, I have been reaching out to various operations across the country and finally found one I am comfortable recommending to people. I currently have him working on C7 LT1 exhaust manifolds to showcase his work.

Pictures, along with comments from the porter:

You will notice how much material was removed on the manifold flange, this area was gasket matched to remove any flow restriction coming from the cylinder head. Gasket matching the manifold flange creates a step on the cylinder head, (reversion layer), that restricts any exhaust pressure/pulses from going back into the cylinder head. Any exhaust making its way back into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke is never good for power production.

Typically I would not need to have such a polished texture if the parts were going to be ceramic coated. Our sand blast cabinet will evenly texture the surface with 80-grit aluminum oxide. The blast cabinet can easily fit long tube headers, x-pipes and some mid-pipes.

Once sandblasted, parts are carefully handled and ceramic coated using industry leading ceramics from Cerakote. We chose to apply Jet black ceramic for a stealth look. The ceramic coating is applied both inside and outside of the manifold and cured at 650F for 1 hr. Once cured, the part is ready to be installed with no further break-in required.

For these, he will be charging $300 ported + $80 coated = $380 ported/coated for the PAIR.

Wow, nice work. Reminds me of the port work needed for stock DSM/EVO3 manifolds which I still do myself. I'm surprised GM leaves that much on the table these days, although I bet the Z06 ones are better, or maybe not.

BTW, anybody hear of extrude honing anymore? That looked promising when it came out, but I haven't heard of it for a while.

Also, does this guy just do coating? I want all my hot parts done this winter.

The Z06 manifolds are made from cast stainless steel instead of cast iron, but the dimensions are identical.

Extrude honing came and went. It was more expensive and less precise than porting.

He does, but MAP still offers coating which is why I did not mention it.

Very! His coating is what's really low-priced, but he uses a legit brand, so we'll see how it holds up.

Re: Porting services

Turk (TheDogfather) just sent his LT1 throttle body and intake manifold to this guy for porting so we'll see how it compares vs. the others already on the market for the C7/gen6. His prices, once again, are beyond reasonable at only $40 for the throttle body and $200 for the intake manifold. The intake manifold is within the average range, but his throttle body is crazy cheap vs. others at $150-350.

***promo prices, retail prices TBD***

Hmm, didn't know that, I'll have to get in touch with them.

Amazing work! Can't wait to see what he will do with the Intake Manifold. I just now need to find take off stock tri-y headers and I will be golden haha.

Can't beat a turnaround time of 1-day for a TB/IM combo!

Re: Porting services

We got the above pictured TB & IM installed; mucho impressedo. Perfect start-up and idle right off the bat, zero ECU relearning was needed to settle the idle down which is very rare with ported throttle bodies. No odd behavior or noises, and the car pulls perfectly smooth throughout the entire rev range with the stock tune! It sounds like an absolute beast on the dyno too.

So what are the numbers with the new ported stuff?

He didn't do a stock baseline, but running craptastic Oklahoma Love's travel stop 91-octane he put down 364whp/395wtq @ Cobb on their Mustang. To compare, my Vette put down 386whp/406wtq stock running quality 93 on the same dyno.

Here's a local coater worth checking out.

He did a set of C7 long tube headers for only $225. This is the same coating I used on my Evo X downpipe and exhaust manifold. I would not recommend it for a turbo manifold or housing, but it is very durable on N/A and supercharged headers, and turbo o2 housings, downpipes, etc.
