The Chase For 8's

Well, after long consideration on which direction i've wanted to go with my car I finally decided to make the jump to a more dedicated track car. I had contemplated cutting up my car because it has some rust, and the paint is kind of dull so i've never really been too fond of the body on my car. But after quite a bit of thinking I just couldnt bring myself to doing it because its a clean title and if I were to put it back to stockish I wouldnt feel bad driving it in winter.

So the search began. There were quite a few cars out there that were fitting the description of what I wanted. I was hoping to find one with a cage in it already since it would save me a bunch of money. And I found a few, but nothing that really stood out. I was about to give up and just stick with my car being a "street car" again for next year. Until I saw a possible feeler from one of the 7 sec Bounty Evo's on Facebook. I messaged the seller and got the ball rolling.

Next thing you know I was off to Cincinnati to pick up the shell. I had a little hiccup and ended up having to work at 11:50pm the night before I was about to leave which sucked but it turned out to be a super short night and was home by 2am and on the road by 8. Made it to Cincinnati at about 9:30pm EST and checked into our hotel. I couldn't sleep for shit that night even though I was exhausted from that long/stressful drive with the trailer. But I was just hoping the car was what I wanted and I didn't just waste all this time for something that I wasn't in to. But I finally fell asleep and woke up then next morning and went to meet them.

It initially looked way better in pictures so I was kind of disappointed at first. But I knew the time/money that they had into the shell and the minor blemishes really weren't that bad. It was, after all, going to just be a drag car anyways. So after we hammered out some of the final details we loaded it on the trailer and headed back home. Here's a few quick pictures I snapped on the way home. It was nothing but a shell. Not a single wire in the car and missing almost everything. But the more I thought about it the better that sounded because I wouldn't have to Deal with someone else's mess:

I got home and took the stickers off and transferred some of the parts off my other car to make this look more like a car again

The car was 22xx lbs with everything in it from the previous owners. But with some of the stuff i'll be putting back in I'm assuming i'll be around 24xx. I'm going to try to keep the weight down as much as possible but this year I just want to get it together and see what it will do. My last car weighed 29xx so with 500 lbs out of it it should go way quicker. I ran a 9.4 at 157 previously so im hoping next year I can knock on the doorstep of 8's.

Unfortunately i'm going to have to keep "some" things under wraps but as I start getting it back together i'll share as much as I can, needless to say 2018 is going to be a fun year. I'd like to get lights back in it so I can take it out to "mexico" once or twice a year, but we'll see how much work that will be

Very cool! And very jealous. Would love to build a 100% track car some day.

Very nice. I like the Mexico idea...... 24xx pounds that thing should just fly. Get that short track down and 8s will be easy.

Re: The Chase For 8's

It's going to be fun I think next year. It has a 2.5 gal fuel cell though which might be a little hard to work with in Mexico. But if I trailer it, I think i'll be alright as long as I bring some fuel with me.

I got the perfect Mexico rode to do runs at. Brad knows all about it. Lol. Hope you hit those 8s next year. It was fun watching your car a couple years ago at pg.

Right on that's awesome! Keep us up-to-date on the build progress. That's an awesome score, definitely will get you in the eights with that new Turbo setup.

Re: The Chase For 8's

I sure hope so. I thought about building a 2.0 to rev out a little more, but i'll see what the 2.3rpm does this year still and make the choice next winter

This is awesome!! Car looks great and fun project. The little fuel cell up front is pretty cool. What turbo/manifold style are you going to run?

Thanks! I'm keeping some of the turbo info on the DL for now. And the manifold style I'm not too sure either yet tbh. Most likely a forward facing but I'll have to see what kind of space we have to work with. Looking at it it shouldn't be an issue though

Love it!
24xx lbs is fucking nuts, i love lightweight cars.
Good luck

Thanks man! I'd love to get it down to 2200 like they had it. but that would most likely cost more than I want to spend this winter :/

Re: The Chase For 8's

I was looking at the pictures in a little bit more detail. Why is the passenger floor completely removed? Did they just toss in stock struts to sell it? What other parts did they yank off it? You can shave off additional weight by putting a tubular K member in it and tubular a arms! What are your plans for the project, or next steps?

Let me know when it's wrench time or drink and talk shit time. I'm good at both. :spin::rollinglaugh:

The floor is in there still, That is just some sheet metal for the rear trunk area I have laying in there.

Yeah they put stock suspension on it to sell it, same with the front and rear cross members. I want to get the rest of the drivetrain in there but i'm waiting for a steering rack before I button it all up.

Then it will be off to have a manifold made and maybe some of the wiring since there isn't a single wire in there right now.

At some point this year i'll be going with a mechanical fuel pump and 4 more injectors. Than getting the front core support modified to fit with the ETS 6" intercooler I bought a month or 2 ago. I also have an AEM Infinity sitting here waiting to go in.

I'm not totally sure what to do for suspension yet, but that will be one of the last things I get put in unless I come across something I can pass up.

This year i'll be running the stock cross members and depowered rack (which is going to suck ass, but it is what it is for now) and then hopefully next year i'll be able to change a few of the other things.

Just out of curiosity, who do you plan on doing the Infinity tuning for you? I had a guy in North Carolina remote tune mine and he was great. However his tune is locked and on a drag car where you probably want to be be able to make a lot of changes at the track, that might not work so well.

Shane has gotten a bit more experience with them these last couple years. Or another shop I know of has some really good experience too

Thanks Nate, you and Mark were getting away too fast I had to do something to try and close the gap up a little!

This should be an awesome project. If you've done any AEM tuning you'll find the infinity a breeze to work with.

How many 8 second imports are there in MN?

I've done just a little with the Series 2 to get my car running, I've heard the infinity has its perks and I can't wait to see how it works!

I'd sitdown and figure out the bare minimum you need for wiring, then buy one of the quick/E-Z/Painless kits with that many circuits. It's nice to have everything color coded, numbered, and labeled should you have to change things later.

When I re-did the Datsun somehow changing from the OEM harness to the Painless one that has the same number of functions shaved 40lbs.

While expensive for convenience sake if I did it again I would have bought cannon plugs to use at the firewall instead of passing wires through grommets.

If you run all LED lights you can run pretty light gauge wire for the chassis harness since nothing draws any real power.

Yeah i'll have to do something, as of right now I think im going to disassemble and OEM harness with the stuff I wont need anymore, I suck at wiring though so it's going to be interesting

If you're going for pure racecar are you going to ditch the factory dash/gauges?

If so, one of the re-wire kits is really the simplest way. It is printed on the wires what their function is along with a number referenced to a wiring diagram.

Yeah it's full racecar. I'll be most likely using the AEM Dash. You're probably right though i'll have to sit down and see what I actually need

I haven't, work has been a little busy which is nice but hasnt left much time for it. Plus I need a heater for my garage now that its super cold out now

Well, not much of an update, but my steering wheel finally showed up so I took advantage of the warmer weather and got it mounted, The place I was going to have build my Manifold may not be able to get it done for awhile as they've been pretty busy, so I may need to go back to a 6870, or find someone else to make one.

Oh nice, I saw the link you tagged me in they look pretty good. I just noticed with my front end there a couple posts that come up for the bumper to mount on and that sits right in the way of my current manifold. So I may need it to be a custom built piece
