update: picked up a 97 GSX and while looking at it, I thought I've seen the car before.. Turns out it's Blakes old one! Guy he sold it to blew it up, then sold it to a guy who did a 6 bolt swap but couldn't get it started.. and now I have it!
Plan is to swap my stock block in and put the head from this one on, throw link at it and drive it though the winter or sell it.

So funny you bought my old car

Re: Mark's Talon

Well I have all the parts needed to finish it up! Block goes to the machine shop this week I'm hoping. I also picked up a new resonator and tip for the exhaust to hopefully get rid of some of the rasp and quite it down.. also installed my launch control device and HBC in the cockpit. Got my new bov welded on and picked up a 2gb eclipse front bumper (since I love the way they look) and a set of 2gb headlights to go with equipped with hids.

Can't wait to start putting it together!

Little update.. Took everything to work and got every last bit of the fire extinguisher powder off. It made a mess and was in every hole/ crevasse. I also decided to get a Kiggly main girdle this go around with a new (reman) 150amp alternator. Just waiting to hear back from the machine shop so I can order my pistons and injectors.

Block is still at the machine shop. Got my alternator wired up with some 2gauge awg and a 150amp breaker. Next is the inline fuel pump with a Hobbs switch.

Almost assembly time! Machine shop is honing the block then I can order pistons. Until then I have started to build a new coolant reservoir and catch can.

Injectors and pistons showed up today! Went with the 2g wiseco hd's with the e85 coating and a set of FIC 2150's. I believe I now have everything to get it back on the road!!

2018 spring? Or did you mean this fall? You going to the one in two weeks?

Re: Mark's Talon

Block won't be done until the beginning of July :( so possibly this fall one we will see how the tuning process goes.

Coolant reservoir done. Still debating on if I want to dump the catch can to atmosphere or if I want to add a Venturi tube/ hose to the exhaust to help with suction.

If that's the route you want to go, Vibrant makes a kit.

Otherwise, I'd go to the intake/turbo inlet if it's a baffled or filtered catch can.

mark4g63t 06-19-2017 02:14 PM

Re: Mark's Talon

Catch can is baffled.. I know a few people who have gotten the vibrant one and I have made the conclusion that they don't put it at a big enough angle so it doesn't create much of a vacuum effect. I don't have an intake yet and not sure if I will have one made by this fall, that and I'm not to fond of going back to the intake pre-turbo. Even the thought of going to the exhaust scares me a little bit with fuel vapors.

goodhart 06-20-2017 08:22 PM

Re: Mark's Talon

With a properly baffled catch can you shouldn't have any issues at all going before the turbo. I'd much rather pull a vacuum on the can than just venting. There's a reason why lots of the big V8 drag racers run crank driven vacuum pumps to their valve covers. :)

Not sure how well the baffles will work. I am going to be upgrading to -10an fittings on the next can I make with -10's on the front of the valve cover. By then I should have an intake setup made and will probably run it to that.

Re: Mark's Talon

Finally heard back from the machine shop and the block is said to be done this week! I can not wait much longer now knowing it's getting close! Hoping to put it together and get a good base tune on it in time for the cookout.

Re: Mark's Talon

Machine shop called back and unfortunately had more bad news.
My brand new MAP Howard rods don't fit into the Wiseco pistons because the pin bosses are too wide. How does this happen?!? Anyways I will be contacting MAP before anyone else gets screwed.
The fix is to machine the rods down to fit into the pistons.
Block should be done next week if everything else goes as planned.
Unfortunately I won't be making the cookout :(

Finally got my block back! Started to assemble it and was about to time it tonight when the machine shop called and said he couldn't remember if he spun the balance shaft bearings or not to block the oil passage, since mine are deleted.. well I went and checked and they sure enough were not spun..got it back apart and knocked the bearings out and spun them. Waiting on a new front case gasket now before I can go further.

Thanks Matt, it's coming along at a good rate.

How's this look for timing?

Re: Mark's Talon

Looks ok from the pic, but it's difficult to tell from pics. Only good way is to take a straight edge from center of cam gear bolts and verify the marks line up on both gears.

mark4g63t 09-05-2017 09:51 AM

Re: Mark's Talon

Went to start it and got a crank no start. It has fuel and spark, timing is good and I've played with the cas and the plug wires (swapping 1&4 and 2&3) and just doesn't want to start. I may have cooked the ecu because under first startup i saw smoke from under the dash area. After some researching I found out the isc and the injector resistor box have "identical" plugs and if you hook them up wrong you can blow the isc capacitor? In the ecu, although everything on link seems to be reading correctly I will be double checking this. Going to also throw the ecu in a friends eclipse and see if it starts.

Re: Mark's Talon

Got it started last night! Going to finish wrapping it up this week and get ready for a test drive. I have the launch control device installed which makes bleeding the clutch a pain, but that's the last major thing to do before test drive.

Have one issue where the isc value keeps dropping. Not sure if it's a bad sensor or ecu related.

mark4g63t 09-11-2017 07:35 AM

Re: Mark's Talon

Had a issue where the car would start to climb in RPMs at idle once it got about 160° or so and no matter what I did I couldn't bring it down. The ISCPosition value would start off great but then drop to zero as the car heated up, causing the high idle/ idle surge.
Determined that the ECU was at fault (really my fault).
So new ECU is on the way!

Re: Mark's Talon

New ECU solved my isc problem I was having. Once I got that sorted out I realized that the idle would go up and down, I thought it was a MAP sensor issue and tried multiple sensors. Found out it was a timing table issue, got that fixed.
After it would idle I noticed that the clutch felt like garbage. Threw a new streetlite and 2600 in for now along with the sprung 6 puck disc.
Threw some 205/50r17's I had laying around on the GSX wheels. And took it around the block. Feels great to drive!
Need to figure out a way to mount my front bumper.
Getting tuned soon!

Re: Mark's Talon

Drove the car around and turbo started to leak oil from the chra to hotside.
Got some -12 fittings and a new oil pan. Going to upgrade the return from the -10 to -12.

About to weld the oil pan bung on and make the hose. Hoping this helps.
The -10 to -12 is a big difference.

Re: Mark's Talon

I would think -10 should be enough, the diameter of the oil exit on the turbo is quite a bit smaller than your -12 line. It's difficult to tell what horizontal/level is in that third pic, hopefully the drain line isn't going uphill at any point. Good luck with the tune!

mark4g63t 10-16-2017 10:18 PM

Re: Mark's Talon

It's a slight "uphill" at the fitting of the oil pan but not bad at all. So far so good no leaks. The -10 is smaller than the stock return so a -12 was definitely needed. Excited to see how the tune goes.

Goat Blower 10-17-2017 08:45 AM

Re: Mark's Talon

Yeah, I was wondering about how the return line dips below the entrance to the pan, but it seems gradual enough that the weight of the oil will still push it through. Looks good!

Feels very good. Has a little oil under car but I think it's residual from it leaking before.
Got to get out and take some pics. Needs a tune.

Got some tuning done last night and going to do some more today. Put some good miles on the engine and its ready for some boost.

Tune is almost complete. Keeping it at wastegate pressure for now which is 15psi. Will be turning it up in the spring.
Here are some more pics from the other day when my buddy Nate and I went out.

I also ended up picking up a set of 17x9 wheels that I'll be throwing some Federal 595rsr tires on in the spring in either a 235 or 245.
