Cobra Brakes on a 1G
I need new brakes. I was considering picking up the Baer Track kit for $859, but it uses a lot of OEM parts that you can source yourself. So I've decided to build my own kit similar to the Baer kit, hoping to save myself a couple hundered bucks.
Here are the parts that I bought to make the kit: ----------------------------------------------- *2 Calipers w/ Pads - $247.80 shipped http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/pr..._id=671cPath=6 http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/co...e[11]=100& That same site sells the Bullitt calipers for $30 less, and they are the exact same caliper, except instead of saying COBRA on them, it has a picture of a Pony. I spent the extra $30 for the Cobra's because I just don't want a picture of a pony on my car :P They also sell kits that include Brembo Rotors. SPECIAL M10 X 1.5 X ~24MM BANJO BOLTS REQUIRED FOR THESE CALIPERS. DO NOT BUY THE BANJO BOLTS FROM THIS SHOP. THEIR THREAD DESIGN WON'T TIGHTEN DOWN FULLY ON THE BRAKE LINE BANJO FITTING. SEE PICTURES BELOW. here you see how they grind down some of the threads, which is what creates the problem: http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/pr..._id=509cPath=6 here is the bolt fully tightened down, and you see it doesn't come close to clamping down on the brake line fitting: http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...6&d=1245194260 *2 M10 x 1.5 x ~24mm Banjo Bolts - $10.65 after tax http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductD...rtNumber=13940 http://shop.oreillyauto.com/product_...013911-005.jpg These are only 22.8mm long, but look to be just fine. Here you can see there are 5 bolt threads sticking through, which should be plenty. http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...8&d=1245199229 *2 Rotors - $85.38 after tax http://napaonline.com/MasterPages/NO...ront+-+Premium http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/625926.jpg *Mounting Bracket & Hub Centering Kit - $164.47 shipped https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/home.php?cat=421 https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/images/T/rtm-911tmb.jpg *(4) M12x1.75x30 bolts / M12x1.75x45 bolts / M12 lockwashers - $14.93 after tax Ace Hardware *2 Front Brake Lines - $39.95 Shipped http://gtautosport.com/ http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/da...rake_lines.JPG They sell the kit for $85 shipped typically on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SS-Br...205|240%3A1318 But they told me they'd do just the fronts for 39.95 shipped. I ordered them for a 2G because I believe that should work. We will see when they come, if they work. They are 23.75" in length measured from tip to tip. I am only going to do the fronts for now, as it'll keep a better price comparison for the Baer kit which also only comes with front lines I believe. I'll get the rear lines too, sometime in the future. Also, I haven't tried this, but what I've "heard", is stock 1G lines can work if you can get the banjo fitting off the rear calipers of a 1G FWD (mitsu p/n MB004539). Using this fitting will allow you to just keep your stock 1G lines, or upgrade to 1G SS braided lines. They're $25/ea at the dealer, so probably be better if you can find some at a junk yard or parts car. http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...5&d=1244820449 = $563.18 Total cost AFTER shipping and/or tax. (compare this to the Baer kit which costs 859.99+shipping/tax) ----------------------------------------------- Here is some other misc good info: Calipers: Front calipers from 94-04 Cobra/Bullit/Mach1 will work as they are all dimensionally the same. The only difference is the 94-98 calipers use 40mm pistons, and the 99-04 use 38mm pistons. There's some aesthetic differences also. Cobra's say Cobra, Bullitt have a picture of a Pony, and Mach1 are just black I believe. But functionally, they are the same, so all of them will work, you can pick whichever ones you prefer. Just depends on whether or not your the kinda man who wants a picture of a pony on your brakes or not :) Reference with more caliper info: http://forums.corral.net/forums/show....php?p=8176637 |

http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...Brake-Calipers
great place to get parts, this is where i get my brake parts for my 94 cobra and the prices are pretty decent. if you go into the kit parts they have pads, rotor, caliper, pad kits. but they come with ss lines for mustangs also. i think you could get a small adaptor made for the mitsu threads to the ford threads from brake and supply, and you should be totaly set i also hear that you can use the 2g brake line banjo fittings as long as you use the mustang banjo bolts http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...0%201&comp=LRS comes with calipers, brackets, and pads im not sure on the thread sizes, but i think the mustang bolt pattern is 5x110, and the mitsu is 5x114 so i dont know how thats gonna work out with the rotors |
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
The rotors fit, except that the hole in the center of the rotor is a bit larger, so that is why the hub centering ring that comes in the kit I linked to above is needed.
I'm not the first person to do this, but I'm having a hard time finding specifics on all this. Things like which lines I need, if the adapters work for both 1g's and 2g's, stuff like that. So once I figure it all out, I'll have it all right here, the exact parts needed, and hopefully the cheapest prices I can find, so it'll just a good list in one spot, of everything needed so anyone can do it. Because right now I'm scouring like 4 different boards, and 100 threads, to find the info I need. |
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
Cool! post pics and prices as you get it together!

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
Not sure if you have considered vr4 calipers on cobra rotors, there is a lot of info on that conversion, plus they say mitsubishi! Here is a diagram for the vr4 caliper adapter for cobra rotors if you don't want to pay $147, you could have someone local cut them.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
I did look into that idea, but from what I've read since the Mitsu ones are 4-piston, they are larger, and stick outwards further, requiring a wheel spacer in many situations. I don't want to run a wheel spacer.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
they will fit behind your rims

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
So if anyone has any more info on putting COBRA brakes on, please share, because that is what I'm doing.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
i did some research last night, im pretty sure its
2g banjo bolt lines cobra banjo bolts cobra calipers, pads and rotors centering rings and the adaptor bracket to run the calipers its still going to run 600 plus dollors if you go with a kit though, or you could get the new calipers, there are sets for 330 right now with pads. get cheap parts store rotors and call it a day |

You should be able to call Techafit, tell them what you're doing, and have them make you up some custom SS brake lines. |
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
If Craig doesn't get back to me by tomorrow, then I'm buying from elsewhere. I think I already found the deals that I'm going to go after.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
You just need to call the store and talk to him
|
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
I have had similar plans to upgrade to a larger rotor(the cobra) and retain my stock calipers. Although i drive a 2g gsx, does anyone have the dimensions or the blue prints for making your own brackets?
|
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
When I get mine, I'll try and post up the dimensions. But also keep in mind you need the hub centering ring made too. In the end I don't think the 150 for the kit I linked is that bad of a deal.
And Mark, I have no idea which store he works at, so no idea what number to call. So I was just trying to talk to him through PM's. |
Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
mind disclosing where you are getting the calipers from, i might be purchasing some for my mustang anyways, just wondering if you found a better deal than i did

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
Craig works at the Brooklyn Park O'Reilly's near Brookdale right off Hwy 100.

Re: Cobra Brakes on a 1G
I just placed my first order!
Calipers, Banjo Bolts, and Pads are on their way :) Quote:
There is someone on Ebay that is also selling the Bullitt calipers w/ pads for $220 shipped. It's maybe $5 more then the company that I linked above, but another option. |
