Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
I am currently researching this project.
I am currently building a narrow block 4g63. I plan on using a T56 transmisson but could also opt for a T5. I have researched the FC transmission from a turbo rx-7. It would be a lot easier if I could find a wideblock 4g63 or 4g64. I have not started looking into rear ends but I could imagine I could have a huge list of possibilities. I want the car to hook up and hopefully with the right combination of tranny/rear end I could end up with some high top speeds also. haha! I plan on spinning the motor to well into 9000 rpm and making 400-500 HP with a 35R or maybe 50 trim? I have a couple of questions: What do current owners of a T56/FC/T5 know about them? Power levels? TQ holding? possible to spin to 9000RPM? should I use solid motor mounts? Will evo intake manifolds bolt onto a 1g/2g 4g63? I have some rerouting to do with the manifolds but oh well they will be getting replaced anyway. Any other comments/suggestions welcome!! Discuss, Colin |
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
the rear end that is pretty much a bolt in is the Ford 8.8 out of a thunder bird with disk brakes

Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
Is that possibly the same 8.8 that is in the CTS-V? I have heard the CTS-V one works as well and is stronger than the thunderbird one.

Awesome, would love to see a Miata rock'n a 4G63!

Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
Don't use the 04/05 CTS-V rear diff, the case is not strong. The 06/07 is a bit stronger though. Maybe you're talking about an 09+ rear diff, but I imagine those are $2k+ and impossible to find used.
My T56 is holding 520wtq, and I know a few V guys are running at least 600wtq on them without any issues, never revving past 6500-7000rpms though. I bet the Viper guys spin them faster, but the Viper spec ones are pretty spendy. Maybe slowbubblecar can chime in on those. |
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
I am not worried about the T56 not holding the TQ/HP goals I have. I am concerned about the ability to spin it to 9000+ Maybe I will just back down the RPM and increase the boost? I want something a little more driveable than a stock tranny DSM gear ratio. I figure the gearing on a T56 is a little longer and will be able to utilize my goals better.
Do you happen to know the ratio for the CTS-V rear end by chance? -Colin |
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
I would knock down that 9000+ by at least 1000rpm. You can not have your cake and eat it too, any setup that will make street able power should not be reving to 9000rpm+. If you have full boost before 5000rpm there is no reason to want/need to rev past 8500rpm. If you are looking at a 50trim, then plan on shifting around 7500rpm, a 35r is a lot bigger and will make/hold power to about 8500rpm. I am basing these numbers on a 2.0, if you have a 2.3/2.4 then knock the rpm down again, by about 15%.

Just get a g54b, I have one attached to a conquest that I'll sell you for 7 grand.

Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I really don't need to make that much RPM but it would be nice. :)
Hopefully I'll opt for the 35R. That should get me the goal power I want and maybe some more room to grow? It will be a built 2.0. -Colin |
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
Sickness. I would love to see this happen.

Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
If you're not going to rev the piss out of the thing, why not go 2.3 or 2.4?
|
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
Well I already have a 2.0 block.. I would have to do a TON more research on the 2.3 or 2.4 if I went that way. I already have eagle rods and wiseco pistons for a 6 bolt 2.0

The Viper T56 would likely be more than what would be needed in a miata with a 35R. |
Re: Miata+4g63+T56=awesomeness!
I don't know if that FC rear end would fit. I think its just the N/a rears that fit. something about the housings? Who knows I have to look into that a lot more.

I dont need that much power from a billet 6262.

A thunderchicken 8.8 diff doesn't have LSD, never did. Only the solid axle 3.8L SC did. You can buy an LSD center for the Tbird, but it's pricey. I'd just start with one that's already LSD.

To me a true dolt in to me is were you don't have to buy any thing to make it work. The rx7 rear diff will bolt in with out ANY extra parts and i was thinking that the Thunderbird were a sold axle. Sorry if I sound like a ass I have seen other guys on the v8rx7forum do the v8 miata swap and I look in to it years a go and they all most always use the turbo 2 rear end or they do a sold 8.8. |
