Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

Well i got pulled over tonight by the trooper that pulls everyone over for anything. I wasn't doing anything wrong whatsoever. I was actually going 5 mph under the speed limit because the street i was on was extremely rough and my car rides like a lumber wagon.

Anyway it was for the side window tint. I have to redo it. It came up as 33% on the gauge. Screw it, i'll redo it with 43% tint over the winter. I think if it would have read anything in the 40's he would have been cool. He didn't write me any warnings or fixit tickets just told me to take care of it. I was ok with that part.

Then he asked me what type of exhaust I have on my car. I told him and of course he had no clue what an RSR exhaust was. He said that that the law states that it can't be any louder than the stock system that came with the car. My car has a nice deep rumble at idle but at cruising speed it's very quiet. I thought to my self, WTF! I rapped off to him what those dam Harley's. They can run around basically with open Headers but nobody seems to bother them. If a Harley came from the factory with a 2" exhaust pipe and 130dB it would be ok, because it came factory like that? This is bullshit. I reved the car to about 3k and he said yeah that's not too bad and that was the end of that.

This is getting to be bullshit! I think the law would rather us do dope and dope dealing than good clean hobbies like these.

What's you guys in MN take on this? You share most the same laws as we do along with IA too I believe. Do you run into these hassles?

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

IA and MN have the same shit. Except in MN you would have got a ticket for that exhaust. In IA they would of told you it's all good to go ahead and drop the muffler and tear ass around the trailor parks.

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

I have never got pulled over for loud exhaust in my and my DSMs are all loud but I have gotten pulled over for winter tint in my 2G. It was 17% on his little gauge thing, he just gave me a 50 dollar ticket and sent me on my way. I didn't have to remove it or anything.

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

No f'n way will i ever take my exhaust off(not that he asked me to or anything). Any replacement muffler that you buy at NAPA or CarQuest is probably going to be somewhat louder than stock. Are they selling muffler systems that are illegal? Any car that has been on the road 5+ years or better is going to have an exhaust that's probably louder than what it was when it came out of the showroom. Bunch of dam revenue chasers. I don't street race, generally don't speed especially in town & the local hiways. It pisses me off when they gotta pick on the nice guy instead of the guy with his exhaust nearly touching the road and hung with a coat hanger. No, they won't pull them people over. F'n troopers! They're not even real crime chasers. They're higher paid than your city and county cops but they don't do anything with real crime like the city & county cops.

What is the max allowed for window tint?

A//// Guy 10-11-2005 10:47 PM

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

50% in MN is the limit. I will never go over that just because of the hassle... and if I do anything it would be like 40% in the rear and 50 % where the driver/pass windows are.

I used to have loud exhaust but not open downpipe style and Ive never been pulled over at all.

Passed 2 cops lately with no front plate and they havent caught me yet ;)

Onefast99gsx 10-11-2005 10:50 PM

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

50% (2) sides and the rest can be 35%, Wisconsin. I knew i wasn't legal on the 2 sides but i never got pulled over in my old GST for 35% and had that on for like 4 years. Had my GSX out since end of May and already got her for the tint. I'm sticking 43% on. That's plenty light transmission. You'll be able to tell the transition from front to back so he won't second guess it. Acutally the 35% i have on isn't even that dark. It's the professional tint not the cheap Gila type shit you get at your local Checker.

I went through the whole license plate thing last summer with the same guy. No other cop EVER bugs me except for this trooper. He likes to piss people off.

Good thing he doesn't ask to see my emissions system :)

Wait a min - if the limit is 50% why did Craig get a ticket for 17%? Am I missing something?

i thought wiscosnis has noise laws enforced and minnesota doesnt? though i have gooten pulled over for a loud exhaust on my integra a while ago. he just told me to take care of it. and the damm exhaust wasnt even loud. it was quite as a mother fucker

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

50% light needs to pass through... If craig had 17% that means only 17% of light can pass through because its super dark.

BTW RK4g63 I got your voicemail, but I got home late so Ill give you a call tommorow afternoon.

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

Yeah it's the tip of the exhaust that gives it off. My exhaust tip is like 4 1/2" or so.

Wisconsin & MN share many of the same traffic laws. It's like a tri-state thing. I was in MN once several years back and got pulled over for no front plate. Even though i was in MN visiting, he could have written me up for no front plate because my titled state has the front plate law. Many of your cops probably go after real crime unlike these jerks though.

Found this: it applies to cars to.

Motorcycle muffler modifications are illegal
No one wants a poorly operating motorcycle. According to motorcycle mechanics, muffler pipes are tuned to work specifically with a motorcycle’s original exhaust system, and tampering with or replacing the original muffler to increase the motorcycle’s noise level can reduce its overall efficiency.

Furthermore, because it’s against the law, increasing the noise level on any vehicle, including motorcycles, by tampering with the original exhaust system may cost you between $156 and $181 if you get a ticket.

Wisconsin law states that “no person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle.”

“Increasing the noise level emitted by a motorcycle by altering the muffler disturbs other motorists as well as residents on streets and highways. Altering the muffler also may void the manufacturer’s warranty,” said State Patrol Superintendent David Collins. “There are very good reasons not to change the original muffler. But perhaps the best reason is that it’s illegal and can result in an expensive citation.”

35% on the rears? Yet they don't bother anyone in conversion vans with blinds on their windows now do they? Lame. I too got pulled over for the tint on my car. Nothing happened, I bought the car with tint on it. I didn't put it on, so I'm not taking it off.

Onefast, you are breaking the law with your tint and exaust, you got pulled over and did not get a ticket. What is the point of this post?

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

The point of the post was to vent that's what it was for. I didn't get pulled over for the exhaust, he just asked me about it. The point is also that there are worse crimes than someone than has 13% darker tint than what Mr. Officer says. It's just another way to milk peoples pockers by writing them up. If they wanna start cracking down they can bust just about everyone that drives away from a fucking bar because i gaurantee most anyone will blow at least a .08. That fact is that you can drive away from a bar @ .15 or whatever and if you drive home without crossing the centerline, etc., you're good to go. They can also start busting half the fucking Mexicans that are in our town illegally. Every week I scroll through the newspaper and there is a entire section of Mexicans that get pulled over and have no drivers license. Most don't around here yet they still drive. Here's how fucked up the state is. They allow these idiots to register their cars without having valid drivers licenses. Why? Because it's revenue for the state. You should have to show proof of drivers license to buy a vehicle. You need a gun license to buy a gun, don't you? You tell me which is worse.

I already stated above that i was gonna take care of the 2 side windows. My exhaust isn't loud. It's probably one of the most quiet aftermarket systems out there. It doesn't sound like half the shit you hear going down the track on import day. When they crack down on the noise levels that POS Harley Davidson's put out, then maybe i'll think about it.

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

And yes Minnesota carries the same law as Wisconsin for the exhaust. -- Road column about 1/2 way down. This was under motorcycles but it's the same for cars.

It sounds to me like he was being a nice guy, cause most of the time when you get pulled over and they say something back to the officer he'll give you a ticket just for talking back and to be an ASS.

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

Best thing to do is be informed:

Minnesota Statute 169.69 is the "muffler statute." Also see 169.693 for
motor vehicle noise. Hopefully the formatting of this message is ok.

169.69 Muffler.

Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a
muffler in good working order which blends the exhaust noise
into the overall vehicle noise and is in constant operation to
prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a
muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle
on a street or highway. The exhaust system shall not emit or
produce a sharp popping or crackling sound. Every motor vehicle
shall at all times be equipped with such parts and equipment so
arranged and kept in such state of repair as to prevent carbon
monoxide gas from entering the interior of the vehicle.

No person shall have for sale, sell or offer for sale or
use on any motor vehicle any muffler that fails to comply with
the specifications as required by the commissioner of public
safety.

169.693 Motor vehicle noise limits.

It is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle in violation of
motor vehicle noise rules adopted by the pollution control
agency.

Furthermore, be sure to read this, by the mn pollution control agency:

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

Ahh, I think this thread is extremely valid. Not only were you stereotyped for the vehicle you were driving, but like you said, he pushed some limits.

I am 5 feet tall, not even a hundred pounds, yet, I was pulled over one night for, well no real reason at all. He said I had expried tabs, though I was able to prove to him on the spot that they were not expired, and after researching into what I was accused [for lack of a better word] for, I found that in reality, he didn't have to pull me over, because had he gone to the next screen on his computer [and I'm not saying he didn't, I have a feeling he might have, he just failed to mention that, needing a reason to have pulled me over] it would have shown him that my tabs weren't expired, the new tabs just hadn't been entered into the system. But not only did he accuse me for not have legal tabs, he proceeded to check out what was in my back seat and have me open things up as well and show him what was in it. He had no reason to pull me over, considering me and my boyfriend who was in the car with me at the time, had our seat belts on, and he pulled me over after I had just started pulling away from a stop sign, and hadn't even had a chance to make it to the speed limit. Basically, he pulled me over because I drive a red "sports car."

The whole exhaust thing confuses me considering the fact that I have exhaust and for what it is, it's some what loud. Had he really wanted to be a dick, I'm suprised he didn't give me a ticket for that. And I'm suprised he didn't check my tint. I'm not even sure what % my tint is, because I bought it like that. But also, when my boyfriend had his Mustang 5.0, the exhaust he had on it when he bought the car was really loud. A few months after he bought it he took everything off and ran open headers for a bought a month. It was twice as loud [at least] as the exhaust he had before that, and the back fire shot flames and sounded like a gun shot. He got pulled over in Minneapolis and the cop didn't say a word about it.

I don't believe in the games cops play. I think it's bullshit. When I got pulled over the other night, I hadn't done anything wrong at all, and since I am in no way in position to look "dangerous", I know he stereotyped my car.

Oh come on, if you saw a cute chick in a nice car, wouldn't you pull her over too? :D

Cops are just straight up P-ricks when they catch you going over 2 or 3 mph. I got caught once doing that, but the cop didnt have a radar, he just 'assumed' that i went that fast. I still dont understand those Harley bikes against our mufflers though...

Onefast99gsx 10-12-2005 03:21 PM

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

TalonGirl- i agree with you 100%. It's the bullshit games that cops play. I was doing absolutely nothing wrong and like i said, actually going under the speed limit because of the shit roads. On my Grand Am daily car I have 20% cheap ass limo tint that i got at Fleet Farm. I've had it on since 1996. Almost 10 years with that car and i've never been pulled over for tint. I drive that car all the time. I drive the GSX probably twice a week, sometimes maybe only once. Stereotype is right. I could take a cheap $50 POS car and practically spray paint the fucking windows black and probably get away with it. You got pulled over for plain and simple, bullshit reasons.

The exhaust thing is complete bullshit. People running around with 4x4's with dual exhaust out the back and dual glass packs, yes i could probably see getting busted. Some of those get pretty dam loud under heavy acceleraton. Why is it that Harleys can rap thru town at 2am in the morning and not get busted?

Why is it that every state has its own tint law but every state has negotiated a speed limit law or drinking age limit? Our neighbors to the east (Michigan) have no tint law. I beleive no front plate law too. It's B.S. Just because a group of politicians sit around a table and make up shit laws doesn't necessarily mean it's right. It's the U.S. If they're gonna do it for one state, they should do it for all. Why the fuck should i pay federal taxes for other states that i don't get the same benefits of their state?

I do this stuff as a hobby. I don't do it to piss others off (like cops, etc). I don't do it to street race. It's a good clean hobby that should have its incentives and not be frowned upon by the law.

Tauni 10-12-2005 03:38 PM

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

DSM10Sec: Youza whore. Jk. I don't think I'd be pulling over any cute babes. Sorry. haha.. But please don't confuse me with one. I effin look like a little girl.

OneFast99: If I were to ever actually race my car, I would do it at RF. So it still [in my book anyways] makes it, as you say, a clean hobby, vs. having, say, drugs be my hobby. It's some what funny as well, considering the house across the street from where I got pulled over is the house of some of the biggest dealers in my city. Plus, I've watched people, as I'm driving down the road, hitting the bowl, and a cop rolls by us as we are side by side, and who gets starred down? The one with the red sportscar.

BULLSHIT!

Re: Got pulled over tonight by a trooper

I got pulled over for "running a redlight" when I took a right turn as the light turned orange or whatever color you may call it. Although I did flick off the tow truck guy, but that was because I slowed down to let him go and he didnt go do I went and he honked at me and flicked me off first...haha. Went to court, found out I was gonng lose so I gave in and payed $150 and took that one year probation thingy where if I didnt get a ticket for a year my record goes clean again. Some law enforcers can be a real pain sometimes, especially when they can do pretty much what they want and when they want. I wish I could turn on my sirens and run red lights and then turn them back off...

I think that the cop that pulled you over was just bored and had nothing better to do...like save lives.

So true. I got pulled over a while back for not using my turn signal switching lanes. But I always see cops NEVER using a turn signal. Ghey..
