Product ideas

I have a general idea of what products I am going to be offering and in what order, but if I get a high demand for certain products, I will make those. I am going to be concetrating on the intake and exhaust side of things, but I can also do other sheet metal or machined parts. I have a very good machinist and water jet company at my disposal. Toss up your ideas and I will consider them!

Right now I will be looking at products that would appeal to a large audience, so one off items probably won't be done right now. Once I get the core products out, I will look at adding more custom things like that.

Spark Plug Covers? I don't see a whole lot of them out there anymore.. don't know if there's a market there or not.

JET 04-18-2005 10:22 AM

Re: Product ideas

O2 housings were one of the next things on the list. The SS heat shield will be pretty quick to draw up in CAD, so I may do that quick before I do the O2 housings.

For the spark plug covers, are there any certain designs that people want to see? Maybe the "V-tec This *finger*" that they were selling on Ebay?

Re: Product ideas

Id be interested in both of those ideas. What about a cover for the battery. Basically like a square cover so you cant see the ugly battery? I dont know if there is market there... just had that idea for a while.

Re: Product ideas

Yes a spark plug cover, maybe one that just says DSM or something. What up air intakes?

JET 04-18-2005 05:50 PM

Re: Product ideas

Polished SS air intakes are planned, but probably won't be out until fall.

A SS battery cover sounds a little dangerous :D

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Keep them coming!

spark plug cover, i'm in the market for one right now, i wouldn't mind one that says dsm, but nothing too much you know, just something simple, (planning on having it powder coated to match my valve cover).

I need a better cup holder for the laser. I could use something to hold a camera, Somthing to hold a laptop. I would like a differnt steering wheel too.

a product that is done give or take 6 months after you anounce its 'done' or 'in progress' or 'new'.
The 02 housings, spark plug plate covers, etc are all things that can be made and thrown on the market with everything else. That being said, the stuff does move, especially if reasonably priced, or of insane quality.

JET 04-18-2005 10:17 PM

Re: Product ideas

Strut bars are out there already and dirt cheap. Cup holders etc. probably wouldn't have enough demand.

How many people would be interested in a "DSMStyle" spark plug cover? I would have to check with AJ first, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem. For each one sold a small donation could go to the site.

Since coil-on-plug is all the rage, make a spark plug cover to bolt the coils to.

That would be cool...wish I had a DSM to put one on!

well, i'll put it to ya this way, i'm looking at the ams or road race engineering spark plug cover, so, if you could make one that just said dsm, and included a donation to this site....(but for a reasonable price) i'll pay now. i would love that idea, just absolutely no offense to this site (cause i do appreciate), i don't know about a "dsmstyle" spark plug cover, i just want something simple, hell, i don't care if its plain, i just want a metal one so i can powder coat it. and it is a good idea if a donation is included into this site...hey some extra money is good.

ps- the only reason i'm looking at the ams one, is cause i'm having them build my engine. other wise the rre.com one is plain, no company logos, nothing.

Re: Product ideas

I would like a flat cut & polished cam/valve cover in chrome, with flames cut in it and the 4G63 cut in somewhere. And a matching t-belt cover.

JET 04-19-2005 10:02 AM

Re: Product ideas

The flames probably aren't very doable, but I don't see any reason I couldn't do a polished SS valve cover and T-belt cover. It won't be one of the first products out, but I will put it on the list.

I could offer several different spark plug covers, plain, DSM, DSM style and COP ones. The COP ones Switzer uses aren't very high quality. I won't be offerening the full system though, just the cover.

Probably something similar to what DV/DT offers?

I like the idea of a stainless exhaust manifold cover. I also think it'd look nice to have a stainless upper timing belt cover to go with that shiny spark plug cover....

JET 04-24-2005 10:15 PM

Re: Product ideas

I am going to look into both of those pretty soon. Products are being put on the back burner for a bit (except the intake manifold) as I have 3 cars waiting to get worked on right now. Hopefully I can keep the intake's pretty much on schedule, then I will be able to focus on the other projects.

Albert Raczynski(aka DV/DT Fab) is another well loved guy on some other boards and by a lot of the Chicago DSM guys. :)

Re: Product ideas

Can you make some, 38mm Westgate flapper doors and some Steel Turbine housing for a direct bolt on to any, 90-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse, Galant VR-4, Eagle Talon or Plymouth Laser? You could have it machined to accept all the Mitsubishi stock and upgrade turbochargers, like the Garrett/Turbonetics turbochargers.

JET 05-07-2005 01:21 AM

Re: Product ideas

Big flapper doors are a waste, just get it ported. They are also readily available. I won't be doing turbine housings any time in the near future. Possibly a year down the road or something, but not in the plans right now.

I am really looking for things that are not available right now, or things that are very over priced. The spark plug cover is a good example and will be done this summer in many different models.

mounting brackits for aftermarket ignitions and translators. Jason made one, and it turned out great. However, it would be nice to just pick one up with bolts and everything ready to install.

For people who like their bling, there's always SS Fusebox covers. That shouldn't be too difficult.

JET 05-08-2005 06:57 PM

Re: Product ideas

I could definatley do the brackets, I will put that on the list! I might get into more of the polished bling stuff later on this year.

Re: Product ideas

Could you make an “ARB” like air locker, for the front differential on a DSM?
Than I could have 100% FWD lock on demand with a switch.

JET 05-08-2005 10:20 PM

Re: Product ideas

Not nearly enough room on a DSM.

unreal808 05-08-2005 11:57 PM

Re: Product ideas

I think you could make something fit in side, with some transaxle case modifications.
I say this because, I work on Suzuki’s like the Grand Vitara, the front diff has an air locker, that looks like it would fit. It’s just a smaller design than the ARB’s in domestics.

Why not just get a LSD which will not only help launches, but everday driving and agressive handling. I was more than satisfied with my $200 BM-LSD (not a true LSD, same as the Phantom-Grip) as handling and launching were both improved (get equal-length halfshafts too for even more improvement).

what are stock exhaust manifolds made out of? How much would it take to make stainless manifolds that flow better naturally VS having to get them ported? im assuming SS would work fine.

Stock is a cast iron design.

Not a bad idea, but I want a spool for a diff ,that I can turn off with a switch. All I care about is going straight after all it’s only a fwd with lots of under steer. I have had the half shaft in for seven years now, I also sell the seal adapter on eBay sometimes, great mod. But as far a spool with a switch I know it’s a stretch.

JET 05-09-2005 08:28 AM

Re: Product ideas

I will look into it some, but strength might be an issue.

Stock manifolds are cast iron for a 1g, 2g's have a better formulation. Not all SS is good for exhaust manifolds. The best by far is 321 stainless (when money is an object). It uses titanium to stabilize it in the medium temperature ranges. Basically all other stainless will start to break down when used in the 800* - 1550* range. Notice that this is right in the normal operating range for an exahust manifold. In that range most SS will form a chromium carbide precipitation that comes to the surface. This brings the carbon out of the SS and makes it weaker at higher temps.

In closing, only 321 stainless or inconel should be used on a exhaust manifold for a daily driven car. On a race car that doesn't see a ton of use, you can get by with 304.

Try modding your suspension...my FWD dominated over AWD's in the twisties. A rear antisway bar was the one of the best purchases I ever made for that car.

im going to want a metal peice professionally fabricated for my 1g to fit my deck and an AFC beneith it. Probably aluminum. Dont know if there is a market for anything like that.. Id also Be interested in some sort of custom guage cluster thats a little bit hidden, i see no point in showing off guages.
