A/F gauge hookup..
I searched, but no results..atleast, not what I was looking for. I was looking through vfaq, and saw there was a different way to hook up a A/F gauge, then tapping off of the o2 wire. But, the link for that is not found. Anyone know how to do this, and if i must tap off of the 02, then how can I? Which wire is it?
-A. Swift P.S.- I know it's not accurate. It's not my method of tuning, but when the chicks dig the light show, i tend to give them a fricken light show! |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
There should be a wire behind the passenger side kick panel you can splice into. i can get a pic of mine if you need it.

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
I can't think of a single girl who I'd actually considering dating who would actually be impressed by a blinking LED light. To each their own. Hook it up to the power, ground, and o2 sensor wires on your ECU harnesses.

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Well, it's not dating..it's more a conversation piece..lol. I do need a pic. The link that the site had doesn't work. I wanna know how to do this correctly, the first time. Email it to me Anthony.Swift@comcast.net thanks!

heres a pic you can see where I taped into the plug with a spade terminal

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Or just got on vfaq.com and print out the directions and do it. Its pretty simple with the wiring diagram.

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
So, it's that single wire, furtherst to the left?
Craig, I looked, but apparently the link no longer exists. Do you have it? I'd greatly appreciate it. -A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
There are multiple ECU wiring diagrams all over the VFAQ, you can even get it from Apexi's website. The Apexi TT monitors o2 sensor voltage, use that wire for your worthless gauge that'll drive you nuts after 1 night (ask Cory, aka talontsi85).

There is the 1G ECU pinout above. The #4 pin on the far right plug is the Oxygen Sensor wire. Tap into that and then you just have to find a power and ground. You can use either pins 101 or 106 for a ground. Power I will leave up to you because there are numerous places you can get power from. I can't remember the best one or the one I used but I am sure somone will. Hope this helps. CRAIG |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Thank yo usoo much craig. Now, will tapping off of any of those be a problem, cause this vehicle has safc, and tmo datalogging software? I don't want to interfer with those either..

On the other hand, it is good for conversations...And on the other hand of that, most of the people who ask dont know what the H*** you're talking about. (Oh..Ok!...Cool!..)thats what I get, haha. |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Where can I find the purple wire that runs off of the o2 sensor? My buddy's talon has it on the driver's side, next to the fusebox, and I cannot find it on my gsx. Also, what's more accurate, the 02, or the ecu? I know neither will yield anything to tune by, but I want something a little better then the other.

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Pointless mod.....
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
take that outta the point. i ddont care if it's pointless or not..i have an extra spot in my gauge pod, and i am hookin up my spare af gauge.

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Well, i ran the green wire from the gauge off of that 4th pin..damn was that a b**** to wire up..no room! I then hooked the ground up, and ran the power, but when the car is on, it only is on the full rich..the light doesn't move back and forth like usual..I wonder if i should just run power straight from teh battery to it..
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
anyone got ideas? It's still jsut a stationary blue light, meaning full rich.
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Well, if you wired it to the wrong wire at any point, you might have blown it out. The signal wire is meant to only handle up to 1 volt, so it you wired it into a 5V or 12V line, it might be dead.
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
well, I ran the green signal wire, from the gauge straight to the pin 4 off of the ecu harness(it's a white wire-I tapped off of it) I ran the ground to a bolt right infront of the driver's side fuse box, and the power is tapped off of a wire i had through the firewall already, that was run straight from the battery...That wire originally ran to a switch..still does, but i tapped off of it for power to the gauge. I wonder if it's just that picky, that I mist run poewr to it seperate?

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Ground it to the ECUs' ground(pins 101 or 106), could just be a ground loop issue
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
so, that would really make a difference? i grounded it on the chassis, as i figured the ground is a ground..
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
In this case, ground is also a 0 volt reference for the gauge. And its not uncommon to see a 1/2 volt or so difference in ground potential between different grounding points in a car.The 02 sensor puts out 0-1 volts relative to the ground potential of whereever its grounded at.So if you ground the gauge somewhere with a different ground potential, you'd have to either add or subtract the voltage drop from the gauge reading. When you're dealing with a rather small 0-1v signal, 1/2 v is a huge inaccuracy.
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Ideally, you want to hook it to the same ground the 02 sensor is hooked too, which is right along side the ECU if I remember right
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
so, u guys think its the ground, not the power that's hooked wrong?
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Without out looking at it, my guess is, the ground or the gauge is fucked up.I doubt the power has anything to do with it
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Did you actually drive it? Your car should run rich when first started
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
yep, i've been drivin it for a few days now..that light doesnt flicker or move t all...
-A.Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Start by grounding it correctly, at least that will be eliminated as a possible problem.
Second I would verify with a logger or a multimeter that the o2 sensor isn't actually putting out a continuous rich reading. |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Ok. I grounded the A/F gauge to the 106 pin (black with a white stripe), and I also even ran the poewr for it, straight off of the battery. Now, when the car runs, the gauge is off, but when I turn the key off, the gauge turns onto the full rich led (blue) and shuts off with the safc..what's going on? Any other way to run this damn thing?
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Its a piece of shit, throw it away. Seriously, there is no point for that gauge on a turbo car other than having some LED's blinking in your face. OK....enough ranting from me....back to being in a good mood.
|
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Don't run the power straight to the battery, hook the power up to pin 102 or 107.
Do you have the gauges input wire hooked to pin 4? If you do, you must have the wires on the gauge mixed up. |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
the wires on the gauge can't be mixed up..they all collect into a plastic plug, that goes into the back of the gauge. Also, when i turn the illumination on for the gauges, the red lean light comes on. I don't even have the illumination hooked up to that gauge, cause it's not needed...
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
So,
Gauge power = pin 102 or 107 Gauge ground = pin 101 or 106 Gauge o2 input = pin 4 If thats how you have it hooked up, I'd say the gauge is fucked |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
arg..now i gotta pull it all back out, and re-hook up the power...

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
I now also have the check engine light on. I wonder if I tapped the thing wrong..is the 4th pin as you are facing the plastic plug, or as the wires are nearest you? And, even IF i hooked that up wrong, how could it cause the check engine light to go off, because I connected the wires back..all I did was tap off of some wires..

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
ok..i MIGHT have screwed that up..lol. I guess I will hafta see..anyway, if that is the case (stupid, stupid me) then would the check engine light shut off by itself, or how can I re-set it?
-A. Swift |
Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Wow, all this for a worthless set of blinking lights....

Re: A/F gauge hookup..
Nice title, Swifty ;) No, it wasn't me, but I know who it was!
