RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Ok besides the RX7/8s, and Supras what are some of the other fun RWD sport compacts out there? Mainly starting to gauge instrest in something that could be a reliable car after a few bolt ons and could have some fun on the Rally X course. The only thing else I can think of would be a 240.
Any comments on rear ends, suspension, and overall durability would be great. |

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
definatly a 240. I was looking into those, and became a member of a few of those sites, just for fun. The stock 2.4l motor (nicknamed the truck motor) has a good torque amount, and with a nice turbo kit from boostdesigns, you'd be solid gold. GREAT fun. Another option is a s2000. A bit more pricey, but with the world's most power per liter motor in that car, you know fun is in there somewhere. Just watch out for the soft-tops. They get wear holes right where the hinges are. An older bmw would fit the bill too. It is an import, and while it's euro, it's still rwd, and you can find them for a decent price. If i think of more, i'll post back.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Isuzu Impulses. They made turbo RWD ones... here's the best place to find em. Many came with Lotus suspension. (and they're cheap!)

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Z3, Miata, NSX, old Boxsters are cheap now, the new lotus's are legal now (yum).

Starquests damnit! Stay Mitsu ;) Quests are cool! Mr Cabe said something about working on a quest was like dating your ugly sister or something to that effect, not sure what he has been doing in his spare time.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I'd say a 240.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Check 3 for a quest. They are probably cheaper than a 240, not to mention more stealth, AND you'll know your way around them better than a nissan.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
find an old corolla 85-87 gts...not the hatch but the coupe...solid car and very cheap.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
mk3 supras?
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
My vote goes for either the Miata or AE86.

1987 porsche 911 turbo
:) |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
sc300 = not generic :) But it's definitely not for a Rally course.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
ANyone have any info on some of the suspension pro/cons to some of these cars. When I start looking (if I go to something RWD) then the 4 components I will be looking at will be how the transmission/engine handles higher RPM, braking setup, rear end, and suspension setup.
Right now I would say a 240 if about the only thing I have look a little more into. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
What about an old 240/260/280Z? Parts are pretty cheap for those, a handful of the 280ZXs came with turbos. The 240Z weighs 2300lbs. Here are some specs of all the Z cars: http://www.geocities.com/~z-car/specs/

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
240's have independant rear suspension, come stock with an open diff on most cars. A few of them had a VLSD, but for the S13's I believe they were only available with the HICAS (rear steering) which most people get rid of anyway. Your best bet would be to get a VLSD from an Infiniti J30, or go aftermarket.
As far as brakes, they come standard with 4 wheel disc brakes, but they are pretty weak though. Fortunately you can get some 4 piston calipers from a Z32 300zx for the fron, and if you have enough ambition, you can get the rear 2 piston calipers to work as well. The thing about the rears though is that the 240 brakes just clamp down on the caliper when you put on the parking brake, and the 300zx brakes actually have a second drum brake that is used for the parking brake. It's just a little extra work to get it hooked up. You would also be wise to upgrade to the 300zx master cylinder, because the stock 240 one (which was designed for a total of 4 pistons) may have some issues with trying to fill 12 pistons. I'll post some more info later. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I would so rock an AE86.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I am ignoramus? erm..ok? Anyway, rockford is dead on about the 240. The s2k (s2000) as I last recalled, still has the world's most power per liter production motor, at something to the tune of 240 hp. They redline at around 11k (not 100% positive on this..I'd hafta go look it up) Their suspension setup are quite nice, and I've tested a few on some tracks. the torque down low leaves a little to want, but with a supercharger they can be quite potent. If you autocross, keep it up around 6k, and go from there. They have a digital readout instead of regular gauges, and the interior I actually like. Braking force is pretty nice, and I even used downshifting to help slow it down even more. Once I went down 1 gear too low, as I was going into the corner, and the rear end swapped with the front. Just be careful with your driving technique, and you will have fun with this car. I'd say the only downside with the s2k, or even the 240 is that they are rather expensive to upkeep, or mod. The 240 has become a much more popular car, due to the drifting craze, and since then parts are more pricey then they used to be.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
The Evo does make more power per liter. The s2000 isn't anything special, but are fun cars though it may make 120 hp/ltr, the Evo still makes like 130.5 or whatever per liter. No one ever said how it was made w/ or w/o Forced induction. Superchargers on s2000s are a waste as they are on any 4 cyl motor and the s2000 redlines at 9k I believe. Oh yea, the s2000 is pretty damn pathetic when it comes to the torque side of the argument.
I guess if you want something cheap Allan, 240s are the way to go in this case but if you want a turbo 240, just keep the KA and slap a turbo on. It's got more potential than the SR20 does. Parts for a 240 aren't much, the SR20 HKS cams are like $200 each, the KA pistons are about $450-500, exhausts are pretty normal costing and so are many other things. It's just stupid ricer drifto drifto kids want BLITZ and JIC and "JDM" crap and will pay more for the stupid name. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
He's going to rally the damn thing, he doesn't need a nice car like an S2000.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
How bout a Volvo 740? :D
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I'd shoot for a 240. If I ever did another Import project, that'd be it.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I doubt it's even for rally, he is more likely just wanting to impress the little girls at the SA in Rogers with his mad drifting skillz into and out of the parking lot.

Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Why not just do a RWD eclipse/talon/laser?... if RWD is your goal? Can be done pretty easily.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Yeah, I want a RWD car as my next fun project. I think we will have another DSM down the road in the household with Jana cause she still talks about missing her GSX.
I'd be up for converting my current 1.8 to RWD if the swap was "reliable" and not over expensive. But then again I don't know if it would be allowed in some events for Rally. A 240 might be in my future and I also looked at the AE86. I just don't like them. Was also thinking of maybe any older stang but that's been done. The plan is to use teh 1.8 this year in the rest of the rally x events i get to and either work in it and stay FWD (ick) or get into somehing RWD by fall pending money and what I decide to go with. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
maybe a 300zx??
id say conquest/starion though, just dont get a broken one like me! |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
Did anyone see that video i posted a link to? RWD talon doing nearly a 1 mile long burnout
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
The MR2 of course. :) The Fiero is also a RWD sport compact, with a good engine swap they can compete as well.
Of the other ones mentioned, I wouldn't mind a Sylvia. heheh |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
I know of a fiero for sale cheap. JoeM has one.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
How about a porsche 944 turbo? Already turbo'd, intercooled, 50/50 weight distro, plenty of mods out there, and you can get them for a decent price.
|
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
why would you rally a 944 or a S2000? Those cars are way too nice for that! You should get a 240 or some 80s trash mr2 or something like that. If you are thinking newer; buy a new Cobra. Make sure to tell the dealer what you will be doing with it. Better yet, show him:)

I'd go 240, older corolla/celica, or one of the z creations for rally. Ever thought of a 1st gen rx7? I had one of those, the are very nimble, and fairly easy to find parts for. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
How about.....
an AWD DSM. If you want to Rally Cross get an AWD or FWD. |
Re: RWD Sport Compacts/Imports
The AWD class is so competitive and packed. i don't mind the competition but wouldn't mind a change either since I have done the AWD thing. But it's what I will do over FWD if I don't get into something RWD. I just don't enjoy FWD.
