Tuning...

Ok this is a really noob question but has been bothering me and could be solved with a simple yes or no, but could be explained too.
When tuning, if you dont have a Standalone or an safc is it pretty much worthless to dyno tune besides wondering how much HP you are running?
Is there anything else that could be adjusted besides a boost controller?
Tom

Re: Tuning...

The answer to your question is pretty much yes... worthless. The only thing you will get is a baseline of your HP/TQ #'s...

But I just remembered your other post... your installing a FMIC? Haven't looked to close to see if you have any other mods... But you will want some sort of fuel control, otherwise it can go kaboom...

Re: Tuning...

Yep, you are to the point where you do need a SAFC. FMIC, T28 and cat-back (right?) could change things enough to cause problems. My next 2 mods would be SAFC then a logger.

Re: Tuning...

You can't "dyno tune" without a way of TUNING, like with DSMlink, SAFC or a standalone. You can dyno till you're blue in the face, but you aren't accomplishing anything without a way of adjusting things.

Re: Tuning...

Yeah the SAFC will prolly be bought this tuesday when i get paid from a side job.
my current mods are, HKS SSQV, T28, elite MBC, soon fmic, intake, cat back and rewire stock fuel pump.

Tom I think you would find these three articles very educational in terms of tuning, I know I did:

Kyle Tarry wrote these two: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58403 & http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105569

Re: Tuning...

Try tuning a SAFC with a walbro 255, stock fpr without a logger on just a 14b to just get better gas mileage.. Full tank of gas barely gets me 200 miles to a full tank.. Time to get a logger!

I still don't fully understand how it works, I understand the basic idea and have all the tools but it's just not coming together.

Do you have a downpipe and high-flow cat yet? If you don't its time for those too.

Shoot and here I thought this was going to be a tech thread.....
Buy some airflow adjustment aids or a standalone, and post back up tom :).
You will also need injectors, and maybe a fuel pump.
Not sure how much boost you are trying to run with the t28.

Re: Tuning...

SAFC2 on its way. once the safc2 and the FMIC are installed im going to do some base tuning then off to torrence, CA (20 minutes away) to Harmon Motorsports to the AWD dyno for an hour for some advanced tuning.

Re: Tuning...

Do yourself a favor and rewire your stock pump before you go. It would suck to pay for dyno time, but run out of fuel because you didn't spend $20 and 1/2 hour to rewire your pump. There is a VFAQ on it.

Re: Tuning...

lol, yeah.
The dyno time for their AWD dyno is actually pretty cheap, for an hour its $100 and add the wideband for an extra $25.

Re: Tuning...

Anyone have a link to what the initial settings should be. The links above are good but dont go over what the initial setup should be.
I know the sensor type is Karman, but should the throttle sensor be up or down? and what other suggestions would you make to a guy that the only expirence hes had with these is reading the manual 4 times.

Re: Tuning...

Read the instructions that came with your AFC. If they are in Japaneese, just go on Apexi's website and download the English versions in PDF-format.

Re: Tuning...

just so happens that the page where you find out how to check the throttle voltage is open right in front of me. ::slaps myself in the forehead::

Re: Tuning...

If your running a 2G, DSMLINK is the only way to go, as you can't read knock, or adjust timing using a SAFC.

After all is said and done, I'd just scrap our slow ass A/T 2G's man, and go over to the "Darkside", and go faster for less money and heartache.

IMHO

Re: Tuning...

Sell the AFC if you already bought it and go DSMLink. Much better to tune with and use. Otherwise, your simply guessing what your doing and its a hit or miss situation. My opinion. But if your running the AFC, some basic settings http://roadraceengineering.com/newafcsetting.htm You can find a car that fits what you have and get a descent start on somthing to work with. On my car, it worked alright til I bought dsmlink, then I dropped about 1 sec in the 1/4. But, that was without and dyno time. You should be able to get a little bit better with a wideband and some time on the dyno.
